Some will advise you to open up the intermediate pipe, just aft of the y-pipe, I tried it on my 4.6L, and lost alot of mid range torque. I gained some of it back, when I ran the 93 octane performance tune from Superchips.
I personally, would keep it 2.5" from the y-pipe up to a few inches from the muffler. I much prefer to keep off the line and mid range torque, vs. top end where you rarely operate.

3" after the Y is for any mid to high rpm range gains.
Stock 2.5" is perfect for towing.

Got mine installed by a local shop. Looks very good, but I need to get some metal polish and put some time in on shining the exhaust tip. Definitely more of a growl in the lower gears, but I dont get any extra noise while cruising. I got the Raptor Exhaust for $30 and a shop installed it for $84, a total of $114. I was looking at some dual tipped exhaust tips for more than that before I found the whole take-off!
