Quick question about converters...
Ok guys, I am bummed because as most of you know I just had the exhaust done on my truck. I noticed a slight rattling sound about a day after I installed it, and it has been getting progressively worse. I checked all the heat shields and all are tight and no rattling. I took it to the exhaust shop and sure enough we figured out the right hi-flow cat puked and the internals are broke and rattling. I am having him remove the internals from the cat next week and rewelding it in. So here is my question- is there anything wrong with having one gutted cat and one non gutted cat? obviously the right side will flow a bit better, but should I have him go ahead and gut the other one too? (no emission tests here)
I say no way, -UNLESS you can get tuned for it. Not sure if it will be a benefit. I might weld in my rear factories, -if you still have them. So I could keep my currant tune. They're a better converter anyway and flow about the same IMO. Compare them with a flashlight, you'll see. The factory rears might be a little longer, can't recall.
I would definitely check with my tuner and inquire either way.

Yeah I'm not so worried about the loss of power as much as having one gutted cat and one non-gutted cat.. I don't see how it could hurt anything being that they are both high flow cats...
I'd just get maggie hi flows put in if you haven't already. Just get an identical one to the one you have at the very least so they are the same

Didn't you just install new high flows ? They should have some sort of warranty.
Yea, you'll have to get your cat checkers turned off (rear O2's). If you gut them both, I don't think your going to like it. I tried it with the factory tune and mine ran like schlitz, - fell on it's face, no low end..

Yeah that's what I need to do, I've actually been trying to get ahold of justin @ vmp for three days by phone and email and can't get through to him... maybe he's gone or something..
Think I asked that already..(?)
Sorry Jbrew, yes you did ask that.. the cats were not brand new, they have about 35k on them, which still seems weird that one would fail so soon.. I'm not sure what made them fail, maybe I was running too rich for a while before the tune and burned it out. I can't figure it out
