Looking for a new muffler

I have a 09 FX4 5.4l and I am looking to replace the stock muffler. I don't know much about mufflers or exhaust at all. I've done some searching around and couldn't find much but I am looking to make my truck sound a little more mean. I'm looking for sound more than performance. Of course I want the least amount of drone and in cab noise but with a good idle growl and get up. But at cruising speeds to be fine. I guess I'm leaning towards a Magnaflow as of right now. Then I've even heard about replacing the muffler then just adding a tip on the end of the stock pipe...how will that be? I'm trying to do this on a budget and trying to figure out what the best option is. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've also heard of people just changing out the muffler and getting a shop to weld some pipes on with a tip and it being fairly cheap. How is that option?

2.5" magnaflow 14" and add a 3.5" or 4" tip at the end in the stock location. This will run you about $150 with all part and labor.

If you want cheap and loud, then how about a dynomax bullet?

Thanks for the responses.

migdaddy - how long should the tip be at the stock location? I was looking on the magnaflow site at all the styles. Do you think a round or oval body? And what about the placement of the ends (center, offset, etc.)? Thanks

Mig, didn't they change the 2009s and up to be 2.75"?

^yes. they did but he can get away with running a 3"SI/SO muffler then there will be an 1/8" gap on the pipe (both sides) which should be no problem at all if it gets welded shut.

An oval magnaflow should give the OP what he is looking for, and i would suggest a 4"x12" single exit tip to replace the dingy look

Thanks guys? So do you think magnaflow is the way to go? Or borla or corsa? I want as little drone as possible. And what is the deal with the center and offset placements? Does it matter?

And another thing...do you think I should do this muffler then get some pipes at the shop welded on or just leave the factory pipe with a new tip? Do the new pipes affect the sound or just for looks?

I would say a Corsa will have the least drone. The exhaust note on there systems are not very deep and rumbly IMO.

I've read through the exhaust guide a bunch and done lots of searches on here and other forums and google. Just trying to figure if just doing the muffler will suit my needs...sound. I don't have alot of money at this point so trying to do this on my budget. More purring and a deep growl and rumble with the least amount of drone. Not quite sure on the sizes and specs of the muffler though and what style. Any more help?

Do you think the 14" or 18" magnaflow?

And what do the specs on their site such as "3.5in x 7in ova"l refer to and
"4in x 9in oval"

And does the offset or center matter?

Ive had both the 18 and 14. I would put the 18" just because the 14" drones.
