exhaust question

My dad and I have almost identical trucks, but his seems to run alot smoother, while mine seems to have something holding it back. His has dual exhuast so I'm thinking of doing that to mine also but don't know much.

My exhaust manifold is extremely rusty, so I figured I'd do the whole thing while I'm at it. Someone recommended headers instead of exhaust manifold and I'm wondering what the benefits of either are and how much I should plan on paying for a complete dual exhaust system on a 5.4 triton. I don't want anything extremely loud either.

Need more specs on your truck and your dads exhaust system. Don't expect much from just an exhaust, unless you are going to do long tube headers and true duals with 2.5 pipes.

My dads really isn't important I just think that mine seems sluggish after driving his and I heard that some aftermarket exhaust could improve gas mileage and help your truck breathe a little better. Plus I'm hearing a slight tick, that sounds like an air leak coming from the engine compartment. Same rythm as exhuast so I figured I'd replace the whole thing. My truck is just a 2001 XLT supercrew with 5.4. Its got 124,000 miles on it. I don't know much about exhaust so I don't know what it will cost, or if a stock system to the muffler would be better or if headers and a cat back system would be better.

Read the sticky up top OP. That should give you a better idea of what you're getting into. You also need to verify that there is a leak coming from the manifold before you start throwing $300 parts at it.
