Question New Member - New truck - Lots of Ideas - Need Advice :)

Hello Hello,

I just bought a 2005 F150 2 weeks ago. Right now it has a leveling kit with a volant cold air intake and a flowmaster exhaust. I would like to look into a true dual exhaust with the X pipe and headers. For headers I have found JBA and with the titanium coating they run $640 plus install.

For right now I'd like to see what other options/combination's could be better. I found that Banks has a powerpack system and JBA has their own exhaust setup...but I am out of the loop on all the options on these newer trucks (I also have a 79 F150)

SOOOO I need intake & exhaust advice and once I have that squared away I would look into a tuner (right now I am thinking edge but this is not the tuner/programmer thread so I'll shut up)

Any help would be awesome, and Pics are definitely welcome.

Thanks!

What you need to do:

Gotts mod for the intake : Click Here for information on how to do it.

Headers: you need some long tubes Pacesetter if you don't want to pay or Dynatech LT's if you are willing to go the high-end route... or Kooks or American racing if you want custom

Exhaust: Take a look here I couldn't explain it better than whats written in there

Tuner: Gryphon or SCT. Either of them will require a custom tune to take full advantage of the aforementioned mods.

What tuner would you recommend - I didn't think the change from stock to a cold air would change it that much (novice judgment i know) only because that is one of the first things anyone does is a cold air intake regardless of the car/truck without a tuner.

well the reason being is that these trucks have a pre-existing condition of been known to run lean from factory and a CAI just opens up more the possibilities of it running lean, of course without a proper tune for your pcm to know it is using a aftermarket CAI
..the gotts/dwv isnt as pretty but gets the job done the same way

That intake mod is interesting and doesn't look like it would take too much time - I'll keep that idea on the back burner for sure

Headers - I had horrible experience with cheap (er) headers on my previous truck so I wouldn't mind spending a bit more for quality - definitely would like them to be ceramic coated.

I did read the exhaust guide thoroughly and definitely want true duels with an X pipe I can't find Gryphons site for whatever reason but SCT looks awesome but the dealers around me do not have websites so I can't get a quote on what it would cost.

Okay question for all -

What is the difference between Gryphon & Edge? I can't find anything on Edges website that says Gryphon and the way it is referred to by others makes it sound like its own brand lol Sorry guys I'm still learnin

Power Hungry Performance is the company that custom tunes the Edge programmers.

http://powerhungryperformance.com/

The wait times on their custom tunes are extremely long. VMP makes custom tunes using the SCT system, and as far as I know, they are quicker getting them to you.

There's a few companies that make long tube headers, and Dynatech is more or less the best in terms of quality while Pace setter is towards the bottom. OBX makes a set and they sell them through ebay. There's almost as good as Dynatechs but cheaper.

Lastly, if you want an exhaust that isn't going to have that same bland generic chambered muffler sound you get out of all Flowmasters, look into the Dynomax Bullets, Magnaflow round body mufflers (Magnapacks), and Borlas.

MAN YOUR TRUCK SOUNDS MEAN!!!
Problem with power hungry performance is that they are not in UT...but still, I think I am leaning towards edge if I can find someone local.
I checked out Dynatech and it does not look like they have a long tube header for a 4x4...i search some more tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll also check out borla mufflers because I definitely would like something slightly more unique than flowmaster (not a dis on flowmaster)

Take it easy

You can order the programmer and custom tunes online through Power Hungry Performance's website. No need to be in the same state/town as them.

Borla would be a great way to go for mufflers...oh, and I don't think most people here will care if you dis Flowmaster, as it is a pretty common occurrence on this site.

hmmmm alright - so for example if I went with an Edge tuner, had it installed locally, then in 2-3 months I redo the exhaust (long tube headers, true duels, hi flo cats, the works) I'd imagine it would need a new tune. How would Power hungry performance know what to custom tune it to without the truck?

Well you wouldn't get it locally. You would get it from PHP, otherwise you have to have them convert it to a gryphon which is more of a hassle IMO. The tunes are created based on your engine, gear ratio, mods, etc. It isn't an actual dyno tune, nor is it a canned tune. If you change something down the road you can have PHP write new tunes and they will get them to you when they are done. If you're going to only be waiting 2 months to do that I'd just order the gryphon's tuner from PHP without custom tunes for now and then order custom tunes when you get the exhaust on.

It all kinda depends on what you want. You don't have to go with PHP nor with a Gryphon/Edge setup.

what is the difference between gryphon and edge. On edges website it mentions nothing of gryphon, on php its only gryphon but it looks just like an edge?
