Here's another pic showing the various types of mufflers.

which sounds better

get on you tube and find one you like the soud of, at the minimal power level you're at, sound is the only reason to change the muffler anyway

88racing, what I meant was how does each work? I can see that the flowmasters are chambered and magnaflows have a single, perforated tube with other dampening material and stuff around it.

tarajerame, I have been looking on youtube and some flowmasters sound really good and others sound not so good, and it's the same with the magnaflows.

I'm not 88racing, but I'll kinda-sorta try to half-assed help

Here is a post from Mike Troyer - Troyer Performance that explains it well:

Though it's not an absolute must, yes, we do recommend getting rid of the "Slowmaster" muffler and replacing it with an appropriate Magnaflow unit - that will help to improve torque. Now exactly which muffler you use will depend on what kind of sound characteristics you want, so that's why you need to call, so we can go over all of that with you. It's not just length alone, for example.

What that Flowmaster setup is doing is actually *reducing* torque on part throttle at any rpm, and reducing torque below about 3000 rpm a at any throttle position - and that is due to all those silly baffles & chambers they use as part of their "sound engineering" - all they are is impediments to airflow, and slow down exhaust gas velocity, which is why you don't see much in the way of HP gains form them, and actually lose torque, especially in the lower rpm ranges. When it comes to torque, exhaust gas *velocity* is absolutely key.

No, we will not need to change what we do in the tuning if you change to a different cat-back exhaust system or just do a muffler change like that - that will be fine.
...
In short, the point is - Fartmasters do not work.

Sound is an intensely personal and subjective thing - you'll really need to hear these in person - YouBoobToob sucks

So MGDfan, which would you recommend: getting a magnaflow muffler or getting the cat-back system?

I am not MGDfan either, but I recommend ordering the muffler and tips of your choice and having a mom/pop shop put it all in for you. Cat-backs are over rated and cost too much, and I prefer my exhaust to be all welding in.

Thats what I was thinking. Everybody says about the x-pipe...what is it and what does it do?

An X pipe merges the left and right exhaust banks to equalize the exhaust pulses and maximize exhaust scavenging. They also sound great!

An other type of exhaust cross over is the H pipe. It has different performance characteristics, and different sound characteristics.

Does the x pipe give it more of a deep, rumbly, throaty sound?

So looking at the pictures more, it looks like you can only use the x-pipe with a true dual exhaust. Could I use it on a Single In/Dual Out, or would I want to use something else?
