Question Chopping the muffler

I have an 04 Super crew and I was going to just chop the muffler off and leave it like that until I got enough money for a full exhaust system. A buddy of mine said that if I left the muffler off, my mpg would drop between 3-5 mpg. Currently getting 15mpg I can't really afford to drop much more. So would my mpg really drop drastically or is that just a rumor he heard? Also, would cutting the muffler off allow exhaust fumes to get into the cab since it's half way under my rear seat? I was thinking about using the tail pipe I cut off and cut a section from that to make a tip that points downward. I'm not sure. And I also heard chopping the muffler wears out the exhaust values quicker than usual. If anyone could clarify some of these questions, it will be appreciated.

Why do you want to cut off the muffler? Wait until you have the funds to customize your exhaust the correct way.

I've seen a lot of people cut the muffler off and like it. It sounds pretty good because I have a buddy who did the same thing. It's just an inexpensive and quick way to make the truck sound better (or worse in some's opinion).

trash. Spend $100 and put a dynomax bullet on and exit it out the back...no turndowns.

I ran with nothing but a turndown for 3 months. I put about 6,000 miles on mine with nothing but cats. I drove it to Delaware from Charlotte NC and back in one day and never got 1% less mileage. I just bought a turndown from Advance and clamped it on but I was still able to smell the exhaust in traffic. It will not wear out the exhaust valves unless you run open manifolds. You could always have a straight piece of pipe ran in place of the muffler. I know what it was like not being able to afford exhaust. I loved the way my truck sounded dumped underneath, but it will be very loud.

you will not lose mpgs from cutting off the muffler. i ran no muffler for the last 2 years without any negative effects. aside from waking up the neighbors every night

straight pipe will OK, just keep it out the stock location and add a cheap tip to expand the sound. No turndowns. Youll get the best sound that way.

Ive done it before...I took my exhaust off for about a week or so just had a turndown after the cats. It sounded pretty good on my truck but kept getting pulled over for noise violation warnings so i just got a 3" exhaust with a bullet and like the sound way more.

I've been running no muffler for almost two years. I actually had a flowmaster catback sitting in my garage waiting to put on, but I wanted to hear what it sounded like with no muffler first so I fired it up. It sounded great at idle. I thought "well I'm sure it will sound like crap with lots of popping out on the road because that's what most vehicles sound like with no mufflers" so I went for a ride. Still sounded awesome with very little popping. Would it have sounded a little better with the flows?... probably. Would it have been enough of a difference to warrant paying for the catback?... NO WAY! So I sent the kit back and saved the $500 for something else. I say go for it if you have the 5.4 3V like I do.
