Now your 350 dollar mod paid off 70 dollars for every thousand miles. (incase you dont see why its because of this.

300 dollars at 10mpg for 1000 miles
230 dollars at 13mpg for 1000 miles

300-230 = 70
Lets say you drive on average as the normal person.. Isn't that 12 thousand a year?

12 x 70 = 840 dollars saved for 12 thousand miles
840 - 350 = 490


So in one year you saved 490 dollars. Now I know this is a bit extreme because 3mpg for 350 seems a bit unreal (if its possible tell me where and ill get it).

Say you do the gryphon cts with canned tunes bla bla bla and get 1-2 mpg increase (lets say 1, take the lower number to make it look less jaded.. their priced at 630 or so?) and spend 1000 dollars on the whole exhaust etc setup so we get 1-2 mpg more (as stated in prior post on this thread). Lets say you regear too because after your lift etc your tires cut down your mpg and we all need lifts.. Thats what 1-2k? (I haven't looked into prices on it so im clueless)

So now your saying
1000 + 630 + 1500 (went for middle number) = 3130
spent on three items which you save maybe 4mpg.

So lets start over..

10 mpg at 12 k miles a year comes out to 3600 dollars

at 14mpg with 12k miles you spend 2571

3600-2571=1028 saved in one year

In other words in 3.5 years you pay it off..

thats if you drive 12k. I go about 18k a year so for me cut off a year.

I understand that regearing isn't just a mpg mod but more so better for your truck with bigger tires etc and many other things.. In this example im using it as a mpg mod.

you said 1500 dollars. Instead of 3 I did 4mpg in my calcs and had a cost of 3600 dollars which atleast double the cost of what you said.. You were willing to bet 15 years to pay it off. With math I proved it took for someone like me little over 2 years.

Also if I did get 2mpg from the gryphon + 2mpg from the exhaust headers etc setup + 2mpg for regearing i would save 6mpg

Which means it would even take less time to pay off that cost..



If I just overwhelmed everyone with my numbers I apologize.. Hangovers and math dont go very well..

But seriously.. How do you figure 15 years?? I understand things like tires need to be replaced every 3 years or so.. But the 3 items I listed, I have hard time thinking the same..
Thank you for taking time to post that info - I was just getting ready to start typing, but I really did not want to...
I have installed the Edge CTS and efans, along with a lot of other maintenance items. It seems to me that an improvement of 2-3 MPG is about all that is possible (on average) with the F150. This is still a gigantic improvement though. My truck was averaging around 11 in town, and now I get 13-14, that is an improvement of 18 - 27 percent.
I think it is important to consider the percentages. Everyone talks in MPG numbers, but the percentage is the number to remember. A 27 percent increase is massive.

My biggest gains were from the efans and airing up my tires. The Edge CTS was not noticeable - I have ordered a Gryphon tune, so I will see if that helps. I will try exhaust down the road - when my factory setup falls off. Why pay to remove an exhaust system when nature will do it for free

wow very good thoughts all. in my 07 screw i have done the gots mod to get a increase in air flow and a duel exhaust witch did give me like 7 more cfm. which did give me like 2 mpg more if i could just lay off the fun/loud peddle.

bummer i just dont know. guess i will have to think on it. i do like the fact its a mod that makes the truck more me than a stock ford.
but there to it seems every one dose some type of exhaust mod and rims.

Recalculate with 0.35 mpg. Yer ROI is now more realistic.

Be advised mpg mods are typically (actually almost universally) not additive. Much the same as most perf mods are not additive - rather, they are considered to be, if done in proper sequence and with wise component selection, more like enablers for each successive mod.

6 mpg is, unobtainium (I know it was just an example, but I'd hate for you to get the more impressionable folks among us hopes' up

A+ for effort!

An exhaust mod (headers, Cat Back, DeCat or combination) will give you MPG gain if it gives you more torque at Lowe RPMs, by giving you a border flatter torque curve that starts at lower RPM than the stock.
At a condition of driving at the same past. If you use a led foot MPG will be worst with modes or without mods.

Ha, funny stuff. Sober, I probably would have just waited to see what someone had to say about it and watch any elbows that would be thrown. ROI formula reminds me of economics and I absolutely can't stand that

mpg increase?

I bought my STX new in Sep. '07. A following is the list of my mod's and mpg increase/decrease. I keep my tire pressure at 37 psic.

1. I ran out to Lowe's and performed the Gott's mod the first week I had the truck. (500 miles - 13.5/17.5 - No mpg increase)
2. FM #17403 - 3" (SI/SO) Cat-back in stock location (6,000 miles - about 1 mpg decrease city/highway)
3. AFE TB Spacer (9,000 miles - no noticeable increase in mpg)
4. AFE (C)AI (12,000 miles - 14.2/17.9 mpg)

Received a best of 19.183 mpg on Conoco (100%) 87 Octane in TX with cruise set at 70 mph (34,240 miles).

5. Superchips Flashpaq #1815 (35,100 miles - 19.834 mpg on Shell (E10) 87 Octane in AR)
6. Superchips Flashpaq #1815 (40,009 miles - 21.841 mpg on Conoco (100%) 87 Octane in TX with cruise at 70 mph)

I currently average 17.8 - 18.5 combined city/highway on Shell (E10) 87 Octane.

Your best mileage will come from keeping your foot off the pedal and from 100% (non-blended) gas.

Tune-up, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve and tire pressure will also improve your mileage somewhat.

x2 on the gryphon tune! I am contemplating the gryphon tune or waiting it out for a supercharged application, whenever that is.

I am averaging 15.2mpg in a 7200lb tank from the factory which now has close to a 100lb rim and tire combination and the 5.4

Truck is due for 30,000 mile service soon and I hope to see some improvements from the current mileage from the tune up.

I use the cheap Arco (BP) stuff too in Las Vegas because I havent noticed any difference in performance or mileage with shell or chevron. And it helps ease the wallet at the pump with 2.75/gallon for regular.

Making a trip back out to San Diego this weekend, then to Orange County and back. Followed by the drive back to Las Vegas. Should rack up close to 1000 miles in all

Keeping your truck with good maintenance is crucial and can help huge. I got my truck in Feb of 09. It was getting 13mpg. Had a few filters changed... averaged 15. After Custom tuned Gryphon, maggie si/do with hi flow cats and DWV intake I just pulled my highest average of 18.9mpg last week... mostly around town with some highway. I love how my truck sounds and the power it has, but I stay out of the gas and just get it into OD has often as possible and watch the rpms constantly.
