Deleting Y pipe for an X pipe illegal in CA?

So I called an exhaust shop here in Camarillo to get a quote for welding some new tips on my system. I told him I took out the y pipe and I'm using an x pipe to dual mufflers now. He said that that was illegal in CA, even though i didn't touch the cats. Said the Y pipe is part of the system. Can anyone verify this? or should I find a shop that knows what they're talking about? Thanks

Had a shop tell me the same thing even though cats were untouched, yet he told me to use some high flows, with a y pipe, the x pipe wouldnt have any difference in the system after the cats then the y emissions wise, would it?

Either way I went to vegas to get my exhaust done since I live here for the summer

that's what I told him, I didn't touch the cats or sensors. might go to the other place I called, then.

Some emissions stations will try to pull that on you because they will think your stupid, and use a DB level rating as an excuse. Truth is, Mustangs, Corvettes, and a few other vehicles come with true duals factory. Why cant a pick up have true duals too? Even with the cats left untouched.

I believe the guy you talked to may be right, to some extent, if I remember my Californicated smog laws correctly, but I may have a way around it.

What I remember back in the 1970s with the newer, smog controlled cars was that you COULD NOT have a dual exhaust on ANY vehicle that DID NOT come stock with a dual exhaust. I do not know if this law or ruling is still in effect today, but I do remember it from the 1970s. And, if I remember correctly, they did check VINs to see if a dual exhaust was factory installed on that particular vehicle.

Now, knowing this, and that you are also from North Carolina, you COULD get a pass by saying that you are from North Carolina if the vehicle has North Carolina plates on it, and a North Carolina title, which I believe would make it legal, but don't quote me on this.

And my company had to wonder why I turned down a huge pay increase to move to California. You almost have to file an Enviromental Impact Statement in California before you belch or break wind.

I had a shop here in Missouri that told me they wouldn't do true duals because it was changing the "factory configuration"! Idiots!! Needless to say I went somewhere else, and they did it for me.

There's a lot of positives for living in CA, but a lot of stupid crap like this I'm not really from NC, I'm just going to school up there, so I wouldn't really want to put NC plates on my truck.

I had my new tips installed this morning (pics to follow), but the guy was saying that as long as the cats and sensors are in place, there's no worry in most places. Just have to find a place that isn't that tough. My truck is stupid loud though, so they may have me there

Moved from San Diego to Virginia Beach six months ago. So glad to be out of the 'Granola State' - the land of fruits, flakes, and nuts...
