catalytic converter

My Ford F150 2004 4.6ltr (V8) 68,000 miles. Truck had been having issue really slow getting up to speed Codes 172 and 174 even after fixing. The other day driving into work the truck started losing power and had to have truck towed. Went into ford dealership and it took 2 days to find the problem. I had talked with a mech adviser and he said that would the problem of catalytic converter. Its either the drivers side or passenger side thinking more throws the passenger side. That quoted my $2100.00. Wow.
My question can you replace either one with out having to buy the whole converter. Ford said you can replace each one by itself. Checking now with local muffler shops to see what price I can get. Any advice so I don;t get screwed cannot afford it.
Thanks in advance to the experts out there.

Buy two hi-flow Magnaflow cats for $96 from Performance Peddler, and have them installed by a shop that will swap them out, if you can mobilize your truck to one somehow.
