Bad Find

Im a newb , first truck ever, 05 FX4, 100000km I was foolish and trusted a pre purchase inspection(without doin my own), I bought a truck... went to fill'er up and noticed the aftermarket air intake(airraid) was not secured to the motor it was covering but loose no gasket or seal, just buy the bracket midway down the hose, so air it was sucking in from the underside of the connection, the actual intake on the motor when removed contained a black dusty gas film as far as i could see, i know this is bad, but how bad? I was 2 liters low on oil ( the inspection misses also), no obvious engine lag that i could notice "as a newb", what do/can i do to see the extent of my potential problem. ( I was shooting a po171-174 code he said was the aftermarket filter) Im so pissed.
also, i did call for a compression test but the informed me the plugs could very well make it not worth the risk.

i don't know how to do pics, im talkin about the part of the intake that connects the air intake with the engine, the valve that opens to let in the required air as needed into the engine.

That would be the throttle body, and its good to unplug it and clean it, uses 4 8mm or 10mm bolts I believe. Some carb cleaner and a old rag to remove the gunk. With the intake tube not connected to the throttle body, I can imagine that the throttle body is caked with crap.

THanks for the quick replies. Asides from cleaning it, I plan on putting the factory intake back on. I will clean the throttle body but am also wondering about what potential damage may have been done and how to recognize it.
This site is awesome and if my Ford pulls through I am going to be a regular.

No damage thats visible would be done, you should be fine. a 3v Ford engine should not have an aftermarket intake unless its custom tuned for it, the risk is to run lean, which the damage of it will be noticeable, your engine blows up. And an engine swap isn't real fun with these newer trucks. But you should be fine. Do the Gotts intake mod and put an amsoil filter in and enjoy the stock intake's performance and no lean issue.

Those codes are probably there because the intake tube was loose. Lean will be reported if you have an air leak AFTER the MAF sensor. Tighten up the connection and do a search for cleaning the MAF in the DIY's on this site. Clear the codes and if they re-set post it up here.

I think I'd ask for a refund on the inspection or at least raise a rukus!

Rightie-o but he also has an air leak where the air cleaner tube connects to the t/b (if I read it right). That would cause the p0171 and 174.

My thought was try to get the intake sealed up properly and he may be ok without a tune. I like to go cheap and easy first but like you said he still may need a tune.

#1 the OP needs to fix the loose connections

#2 he needs to get a cutom tune before he does some damage (if he hasn't already)
