catalytic converter question

This has nothing to do with my truck. The van my band is using for tour right now (2001 Chevy 3500) is throwing the P0420 code for a bad cat.

Can we just save some cash by having the cats deleted and put a straight pipe in it's place? Will it not pass inspection? Thanks guys. The van is registered in NY.. Not sure about their emissions testing.

If it has to be inspected for emissions, it won't pass without cats.

Correct. Running catless it wont pass visual, or emissions sniff testing.

Probably cheaper to just stick some hi flow cats in there and call it a day.
