Air Force 1 Issues
Air Force 1 Issues
I installed an AF1 3" CAI on my 07 5.4L truck. Only other modifications are a 2" level and a Magnaflow SIDO cat-back.
After installing the intake, the truck feels more sluggish than stock. I don't have any codes coming up, no lights coming on or anything. When I start the truck, it idles a little on the high side and after about 15 seconds it finds its way down to a normal idle. If I try to drive off before the idle has come down, the truck surges (sounds and feels like I am pressing and releasing the gas) and then after a few seconds it acts normal. Even when everything is warmed up and I've been driving, it just doesn't have the get-up-and-go that it used to.
Most of my mechanical experience has been with motorcycles (although I do have enough ability to rebuildcarbs, install cams, work on suspension, electrical). From my experience with those, this sounds like an air leak. Once we get a day out here, I'm going to go poke around with some starter fluid.
Questions :
- The MAF doesn't seem to have as tight a seal on the AF1 as it did on stock. Mine didn't come with a gasket or anything to correct this. Anyone else noticed this?
- Anybody else run into these symptoms?
Thanks!

Our repair cruise is about to begin...but first, let's make sure we're all in the same dingy.
Have you put the stock intake back on and noticed the same problem?
Do the instructions specifically show a gasket and your kit doesn't have one?
Did you follow the instructions to the letter?
Did you disconnect the negative battery terminal for approx. 10 minutes during or after the install?
Is it an oiled or dry filter?
Did you clean the MAF when you installed the intake?
What did AF say when you called them?
How many miles on the truck? Properly maintained (IAW the Ford Maintenance Schedule)?
Is it too late to take the kit back and do this instead?
We'll be happy to help you row your boat, but ya' gotta put your oar (if I was MGDfan v.5.0 it would have been ore) in the water too!

Unfortunately the stock intake is 3 hours away, and I work 12 hours a day, so I haven't gotten to that yet.

No gasket shown, I just wasn't sure about the fit, especially since this is for the MAF
Did you follow the instructions to the letter?
Yes. I went back and re-read them about 5 times.
Did you disconnect the negative battery terminal for approx. 10 minutes during or after the install?
I disconnected the cable, performed the installation, and reconnected the cable about 30 minutes after I was done. After having these issues, I disconnected the cable again for an hour. No change.
Is it an oiled or dry filter?
It is oiled.
Did you clean the MAF when you installed the intake?
Yes I did. I used only MAF cleaner, and did not touch the wires or damage the sensor in any way that is visible to the naked eye. I held it by the external connector the whole time.
What did AF say when you called them?
I have not had a chance to call them yet (I know, I realllly need to, just wondering if anyone had a similar experience)
How many miles on the truck? Properly maintained (IAW the Ford Maintenance Schedule)?
33,000 miles and properly maintained to the T.

Yep. This exhaust sat around for over a year before it got installed. Between moving, getting married, and traveling for work, it got put on the back burner.

I'll row as hard as I can!

My question is where did you buy the AF1? I have one for my '07, but seeing as they are no longer in business (and haven't been for some time) you probably bought a used one, correct?
If it's not used then it may have been one of the last few laying around somewhere, so I hope you got the correct one for your truck.
Here's the 3" on my truck, and my MAF fits perfectly. This is the one you should have.

Not gonna happen. I can't recall the exact date but it was about a year and a half ago that they went under. It was when the economy started going downhill.

I completely forgot that AF was out of business. Sorry.
Maybe you could take a picture of the MAF and e-mail it to Troyer and ask them if it looks right.
I did a search and found one other owner that had a problem very similar to yours (2004 IIRC), but he never posted his solution (other than he was thinking about putting the stock intake back on).

Is that the link? ^^
If so I'd call to check everything out because they haven't updated that page in quite a while. And I agree, it may just be an issue with the MAF....call and send some pics their way. Heck send them to me if you want and I'll go out and compare them to mine. My email is my username here @clemson.edu.
