question on stages

So i always wondered what's the stages of vehicle parts. Like when they say there CAI is a stage 2 and what not. Can someone please inform me? I'm trying to gather more information on CAI as well as engine upgrades so I know what I'm putting into my engine. Thank you in advance.

Good morning, sir! How are you today? I am well, thanks!

To attempt to answer yer question I'll post up a couple links:

http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...pedition%20Etc.

http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...parent=93&pg=1

So, it's basically a marketing tactic ( 'Stages' and/or 'Power Packages'), that define ever-increasing levels of performance as you go 'up the ladder'.

An intake, tuner, or exhaust by themselves is not a 'stage'. A combination of these three mods, done CORRECTLY, using PROVEN components, can be cosidered a stage - usually, but not universally, 'Stage 1' as noted in the first link.

Further bolt-ons again can create incremental levels of performance and thus can be categorized into 'stages'.

Indeed, cams for example are sometimes clasified as such unto themselves - mild-to-wild, in ever increasing levels of performance, and ever decreasing levels of daily driveability, lol.

Marketing artifacts - but ones that can save you both money, time, and better ensure that you are actually adding stuff that really works, as opposed to a few folks here who do ad-hoc mods with no clue, yet insist that they have added substantial gains, because they 'feel' it. No numbers, no datalogging, no proof. Just a poorly calibrated butt-dyno and blind faith in manufacturer's BS.

Mods should be considered holistically, IMHO.

Finally, and perhaps MOST importantly, do ALL yer research FIRST (again as opposed to some fellas here who buy stuff, then ask if it good, and have hissy fits / go into frothing-at-the mouth' denial, when they do not like hearing they bought POS components, because they actually believe the manufacturer's inflated claims. Call some of the respected speedshops referenced elswhere on this site - ask a LOT of questions.

Save yerself from that lobotomized approach. Bubba, the Engineer from FartMaster even has a term for it: "Ignancy"

I hope this brief summary helps a bit. Remember - NO offence intended. Seriously.

Cheers & Bests!

i used to have a stage 2 WRX which was a custom computer setup with an up-pipe and downpipe with a cat back kit. it was pretty fun!

like they said above, a stage 2/3/4/etc is basically a package of items put together. there is no set HP numbers although the companies/businesses who put these kits together will swear up and down the HP/TQ numbers. most stage kits tend to be for imports based off what i have seen over the years.

Ahh So my truck will be at stage one after I get my CAI and programmer installed. That's pretty cool. Sounds cool just saying it ;D But As of right now I'm getting a Edge Evo Programmer with an Brute Force CAI and I need to do some more research on what kind of Chip I want to install in my baby. And thanks for the briefing on this subject.

Also was the AF1 CAI discontinued?

Hello again!

Yes - the AF1 is history.

Please - check with the Edge folks first to confirm you can run that intake safely. I suspect you cannot; it changes the area in the MAF venturi - which the canned Edge tunes cannot compensate for.

Good luck.
