Large diameter (4") single exhaust 5.4L

Hello,

I'm just looking for opinions on this. Anyone on here ever ran a big single cat-back exhaust such as a 4" pipe, hi-flow muffler, exiting the stock location through a single rolled edge tip (probably 5")?

My engine is the 5.4L v-8. My truck is a 02 Supercrew 4x4. It has an airaid intake and a superchips tuner already installed.

The muffler I'm looking at is the Borla Xr1 4" in/out. Stock 4 cat set-up would be retained.

Thanks

I'm thinking 4" would be way too big for your application.

I know on the newer 04+ 3" single is the best option for performance, they sound awesome too!

This is a gasoline engine, massive exhaust pipes aren't needed. At the very very very most, you could get away with 3.5 inches, but I won't recommend it.

You have got to be kidding me..

The 4" XR1 belongs on drag cars, Buy the 3" XR1 and run 3" max off your Y pipe.

Not just 04+ F series, all gas engine trucks, Chevys, Dodge, older Fords,

that's ok,

sounds like I need to do my homework some more before making any final decisions...but that is what these forums are for, right?. I just wanted to throw it out there and get some opinions.

thanks again for the info.

If you dont have the muffler hten dont be bummed out, be glad you learned its too large to use before you invested money to having an entire system fabbed. If you have the muffler already, sell it for $100 on ebay and that will buy you two decent priced mufflers, or a nice stainless Borla or Flowmaster.

I don't have the muffler yet or anything. I was just thinking out loud so to speak. It may sound silly, but I already have a custom exhaust on my truck. I am just always thinking about what I want to do different next time. It seems like I am never happy and I am always changing something on the truck. My wife says I have a sickness. ha ha ha. I think she's right.

It happens, this is how men have hormome mood swings

What setup are you currently running? And what would you like to achieve from it?

Current Set-up is:

Stock 4-cat system going into a single 3" pipe, then into a Cherry Bomb Extreme 3"in/dual 2.5" out, then two 2.5" tailpipes that run side by side (paralleling each other) exiting in the stock location behind rear passenger tire into two flowmaster rolled edge tips (3.5" or 4" I think).

I like the sound of the current set-up, although it could be a little deeper. I am not happy with the quality of the Cherry Bomb muffler. It is very rusted and looks like a piece of crap after only 6 months on the truck.

Everyone I see seems to go with duals exiting at the back either 45'd or straight out the back with slant cut truck tips. That is why I went with the above setup first...to have something a little different than others. But now I am really being attracted to a large diameter single exhaust with a big (5") rolled edge tip...kinda like a cat-back diesel set-up look. I want it to be loud and deep and sound good at an idle, possibly a little louder than the current setup I have or at least, just as loud not quieter.

I would like my muffler to look good this time and last a long time (stainless or even polished stainless). I would love to have a mandrel bent stainless tailpipe for the system too, in something like 3" or 3.5". It seems like most of the good stuff out there is for the 2004 and newer trucks though, not my 2002 supercrew.

As far as what I am trying to achieve? Just a good sound/look for crusing around basically. Peak power numbers and such are not really a big concern, it just has to sound spot on perfect (Is that ever possible?). My truck is big and lifted with a 6" Fabtech lift and nice wheels/tires. I requires a deep muscular tone and a sharp looking system to complement its size. I like the idea of that big (5 or possible 6") rolled edge tip hanging out with a deep tone eminating from it.

Now I do know that my 4 stock cats are hindering the amount of deep sound that comes through the exhaust system. Lets just say for this discussion that those shall remain untouched. I would rather not change them or cut them off, eventhough that is where the more sound volume can be achieved.

Well, you asked, so I hope this wasn't too much of a ramble...ha ha.

Well just because others have something doesn't mean its played out, it may be because it satisfies the driver. There 6 different people on here with my exact whee and tire package, but I have it because I find it to work well with my truck, I dont care who has it already, I like it so I have it. No one else in my town has such custom wheels anyways.

I would delete your rear cats, or have hi-flow cats replace all 4, or at least 2 cats. And switch to a 3" Magnaflow 4" round muffler, or go with true dualed 4" round Magnaflows, and have a left tailpipe put in. Run it at 2.25" and you will love the sound and performance, and the long lasting life it will give you.

I know you said you would like stainless but i would look at a dynomax bullet. Even with your four stock cats it will give you a nice deep, loud sound. Run 3" like you have into the 3" bullet and then run it to wherever you want and get a nice 5" tip put on.
