Discolored tip, what to do?
Here is a pic of my tip, it is dirty from road film but you can see the line where the discoloration begins. That line is how far the pipe is inside the tip. I have tried many things to clean it. Wheel cleaner works the best but doesn't get it all. This is my second tip that has done this, the first was an ebay special, and it is a Magnaflow rolled single wall. This tip was fine until the first time I towed my travel trailer with it on back in the spring. My dad's truck has the chrome package and the factory tip and he has not had this problem when towing his trailer. I have thought about buying a double wall but they are around $100 or amybe just getting a factory Ford one but I hate to end up with the same problem again. I was wondering if anyone ever powdercoated their tip? Is that possible with the high temps? I may just end up dumping it but I really like the rolled tip look.

X2 that will polish right up. the stainless tips on my ranger do that because they come out behind the tires.

First clean the tip as best as you can to get all the surface dirt/grit off it. Then get some #0000 steel wool (it's the finest and won't scratch) and couple that with some good metal polish. Then go to town polishing. The steel wool working with the polish will take out a ton more discoloration and junk than just by using the polish alone. I swear by the steel wool with stainless steel tips. Makes em look better than brand new when they get real bad.
If that doesn't work, and the discoloration persists, then it may just be heat discoloration of the stainless. This is very common with stainless as when it heats up it turns to a goldish color. In this case I might suggest using some "Blue Away" polish that is made to remove heat discoloration on motorcycle pipes.

My tips look awesome. A few little fine scratches from rocks, but I couldn't wash them for a week weeks and they cleaned up. However i do keep them waxed all the time so that helps.

yea but the f-150 doesnt get 60mpg and do 0-60 in quite as fast either, lol!
I sold the bike in order to keep the sleds, mistake!! its snowed 1/8 of our usual this year.. I'm sure I'll be buying another bike though, but I have to sell the sleds first

Your exhaust guy left too much pipe into your tip, he should have trimmed it back to the flange right outside the weld.
There is no need for your exhaust to go past that flange.
If all the other great ideas don't work your fix is to purchase another tip and have your exhaust guy trim that pipe back a bit.

If it's a polished stainless tip he won't have that problem.
Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to try the polish and maybe the steel wool as well. The tip is stainless and I am sure it is a heat issue. It did it first after a long tow in the Ozarks. As far as my exhaust guy that is me, I'm no pro just own the right tools. The first tip I did exactly as described at the flange. The whole tip turned color. So when I put the new tip on I left a few inches in the pipe to see if it would help keep the heat off the tip. Obviously it did but only that far. My dad has a stock set up with the factory chrome tip on his 08. He does not have this problem. All I can figure is that the huge factory muffler helps get rid of much of the heat since it has more surface area where my unrestricted Magnaflow lets it pass more quickly through and it gets to the tip. I have owned other trucks with chrome and stainless tips in different set ups and never had this problem before.
