Question regarding large tips

I for whatever reason like the large diesel-like tips on trucks. I saw a truck OBS 150 with a 5" black chrome tip(at the stock exit) and it looked awesome. I think it looks even better on lifted trucks. Anyways... say for example if I were running a SI/SO exhaust with a 2.5" outlet how exactly would they increase the pipe size to the size of the inlet on the tip? I would assume would be somewhere around 3.75 on a 5" tip. Reason I ask is because the shop that I got my exhaust done did mine really crappy going from 2.5 to 3. They just overlapped the 3" over the 2.5 and welded the crap out of it until it finally stayed. It looks like...crap . I really want to get my exhaust changed with a larger tip like that, but I definitely do not want it to look like it does now with the overlapped pipes and stuff.

They use adapters that go from a small size to an inch or two bigger.

Oh okay. Thats what I had always thought, but I guess the shop that I took my truck to just sucked. Guess I should have noticed how much they sucked when they crimped all the exhaust piping. I assume that any decent place would have those adapters because I am sure they have diesels that want 4 or 5" piping all the way.

I always thought that putting a larger tip on there would change the sound.. even if its not a night and day difference.. it would still be there. I was told today that the tips have nothing to do with it by some 80 year old mechanic/welder that says he has been doing exhaust forever. Was I wrong?

Do a search for exhaust pipe adapters. They make a ton of sizes to go from various sizes to other various sizes. These adapters slide over your existing pipe to your larger pipe and get welded on

That's 2.5 to 4

MBRP makes a lot of exhaust adapters. Just google exhaust adapters and you'll find something. Good luck with it.
