Air volume or Air temp

Which is better to have? MORE air volume from an intake or COLDER air? I thought I had a Airaid intake on the 03 SCREW I just bought, but I'm unsure now as it doesn't look likr the ones on their site. I do know I have a PowerAid throttle body spacer. My intake is a chrome tube with a large cone filter. The filter appears to be the one made by Speed by Spectre. I do not have any type of insulation brackets that seal the filter when the hood is closed. Its just out in the open---basicly a Short Ram Intake. I work 12.5 hour days so i haven't had a lot of time to double check its make.

Anyways---I read up on the Gotts mod. And that presents a problem because I do not have the factory intake(and I don't have any good junkyards nearby). BUt which would be better in real world use??? Having COLDER air or having MORE air. Ideally you'd want MORE COLDER air I know....but everyone is so impress by the Gotts Mod it has me thinking. I'd like a little more performance out of my 5.4L and plan on doing a plug change when I get a day off. It has 136,700 miles on her. I hope all of this rambling gets my question across---DirtySCREW

More air is the key for performance, OEM intakes suck in colder air because its guided from the fender and not the engine bay like cone filter open applications do. More air brings more performance.

But, more air has to have more fuel to make more power. An aftermarket intake isn't going to do much for performance unless you're tuned optimally for the new intake.

well what you really want is both, but like every thing else in the world you can't have it... well you can but it's easier to just go with volume, or get a supercharger. i am currently trying to perfect a custom CAI that will do both, but like i said it's easier to get volume. if i succeed i will be sure to post about it. also forgot no one else said it CUSTOM TUNES!!

What is ya'lls advice for me? Do I just get a good quality cone filter and keep what I have or try to find an OEM setup and do the gotts mod. I want performance, but MOST of all I want as many MPGs as I can get. My truck has a throttle body spacer(whipee---from what I can tell it doesn't help fuel injected engines but it was on here when I bought the truck) and a Short ram intake. I like Banks intakes and the Volants. They seem to provide MORE air volume as well as colder air as they have intake tubes that extend down th efender to get truely cold air. Plus they are sealed thus reducing Temperature. But they're freakin expensive and I can't even find a Banks to fit my 2003. I do plan on getting an exhaust..but thats another topic and another post in the future---DirtySCREW


forgot to mention that I do have a Hypertech (Programmer III) set in an 87 octane tune---(but again whipee as I can't tell any performance out of it. The 05 Yukon 5.3L I use to own with a K&Ndrop in, flowmaster 50 series SIDO, 3.73 gears would smoke me!!)

you got any pictures of your setup? I had a cold air intake for my supercharger that sucked out of the fender and also had another snorkel tucked behind the headlight. I have removed that 3" setup and currently use a 4" open air element, although my IAT's might be a few degrees higher, I gained 17 HP to the rear wheels on my last dyno. That is 17 RWHP... with the open air setup, you might just wanna get a better cone filter and see how she runs with that.

DirtySCREW how hot does it get where you live? if it doesn't go above 100 degrees, and you don't do a whole bunch of city driving then it's not worth it to find something else unless you really want to. secondly lose the hypertech they are worthless, get a edge or gryphon, and look into custom tunes. but as always remember it's your truck and do with it as you please.

bat---I'll try and get a pic 4 ya.

Jimmy---You're absolutely right---hypertechs are WORTHLESS. I'm getting ready to put it back to stock from the 87 tune to see any differences in gas mileage. I plan on getting a gryphon eventually.

I've always been a fan of the K&Ns FIPKs. I don't know if its true, but the black tube may not be as "pretty" but it is suppose to not hold as much heat as the silver chrome shiny ones. Guess what--mines chrome!---DirtySCREW

Don't forget you have to oil the K&N's. If it were me, I would get an enclosed box intake like an S&B or Volant.

Noone mentioned this either, but open element intakes let much more dirt into your engine than stock or an enclosed setup. Not worth the minimal power gains IMO.

How so?

Assuming both have the same filter, the open element will get more air aswell as having to filter more debris. As long as it's not full, it'll for just as well as the enclosed setup.

Following someone down a dusty gravel road, BOTH intakes are going to have to suck dusty air...

Well, I have an Air Force 1 air intake with I believe a non-AF1 filter. Again, the filter looks to be a Speed by Spectre filter.---DirtySCREW

I think the guys running the AirForce 1's are using S&B filters, but I am not 100% sure, I am sure someone who has one and replaced their filter will chime in with what they are using since the company went under.
