I'm currently stationed here in VA and tried to have two of my cats gutted and couldnt find any local shop to do it. The inspections here are strict also. You HAVE to have the same amount of cats on as the day it came from factory. But luckly my truck is registered in SC and like linusb212 NO INSPECTIONS!!! Still a PITA to get work done up here on the truck. Good luck with your situation though.

black5.4beast, im a harris county vehicle inspector

also your trucks an 08, bring it in before december and you can get a safety sticker so no checking emissions. still supposed to check for cats, and what not but unless the truck his loud as **** most inspectors will not crawl onto the ground to check underneath.

i also know a shop who will remove your cats as well if you need a shop to do it. or if you can weld i have a welder and saw your welcome to use to put piping in.

got any questions just PM me.

dont yall have to hook the vehicle up to computers and what not, to check exhaust fumes and stuff.

id like to learn how to do emissions inspections but the closest emissions town is about 2.5-3 hours away!

i guess you already no safety inspections since your an inspector, but i guess just so the info is out there for any one reading this thread here is the summary of it all.

emissions for a 85-95 you actually check exhaust fumes, you put the "sniffer" into the tail pipe and run the vehicle on a dyno at 15 mph and 25 mph running below 2500 rpm and it reads all the emission readings (asm test). on vehicles 85-95 with awd (or a motorhome) you do a 2 speed idle instead of the asm, which you put the sniffer in the tail pipe and just hold the rpm between like 2200 rpm and 2800 rpm i think it is (haven't done a 2 speed in a long time).

for 84 and older as well as 2008+ it is safety only so tires, wipers, lights, seat belts, and all emission parts still on vehicle if it was equipped with it, some more stuff as well but thats the major parts of the test.

1996 + is an obd emissions test. plug into the computer and it checks for codes. alot of people fail for not readys which are caused if your battery has died or been replaced right before coming to the station or ressetting a code thinking they will pass. driving usually 50 miles gets your not ready's back to readys.

both obd and asm/2speed idles still have the safety part of the test as well.

NICE! i would hate doing that tho, even now im like CRAP these people want an inspection. all we do is safety, lights, tire tread, wipers, check for muffler/converter/exhaust leaks.

dont yall still charge even if they fail, i heard that. were suppose to but we dont cuz its rediculous. and its only 14.50!

yea we have to, usually i try and let people know if their going to fail before i go thru the whole inspection so they can leave and just get it fixed but even then people flip **** on you.

if you do fail tho and pay, you have 15 days for a free re-inspection.

yea, we just never know if they will pass emissions until we go through the whole inspection and at that point we have to charge because its on the logs so the company will find out, now if someone asks can you test to see if i will pass and im in a good mood ill check it but im not going to do each inspection and check that. if their check engine light is on and i notice it i usually will tell him they are going to fail off the bat or check it before i do the inspection and let them go.

i have a question for people with inspections do you have to do it every year after you buy your truck or do you have a couple years after you buy your truck???

here in Cali for the first 5years there is no smog and after that i think its every two years and we don't have to get inspections ever other than it has to pass smog

In PA, everyone is required a yearly inspection, and some counties are emissions counties, others aren't, such as where i'm at, I only need inspection.

you should be safety only up until december for sure, most places just do safety's on 08 and don't check build date on the door. once the new year starts you will most likely get safety and emissions. when does your sticker go out? PM me when you need to get your truck inspected.

in texas, its every year but when you buy a vehicle new the sticker on it is good for 2 years.
