True Duals...pros and cons?
Looking to put a new exhaust system on my 2008. I really dont know much about exhaust systems. I want something with a deep crisp rumble but nothing obnoxious. From what I have read on here seems that Flowmaster 50series or Magnaflow 14" is prolly what Im looking for. Should I consider True duals ?
You would like the 14" si/do.. great rumble and minimal highway drone. part # 12198 (3" inlet - dual 2.5" outlets). True duals is really a personal preference. It adds more rasp at higher rpms like straight pipes and depending on the pipe size you can gain high end or low end. (2.5 high end which is not bad for highway and 2.25 for increased low end and gains across the rpm band.) I do like true duals but depending what shops charge they can cost more and most people have no need for them. I would just say go the si/do route because unless you specifically what for example what Darren has... there is not much need. True duals allow you to change the sound like 4.6punishers exhaust with magnapacks and an h pipe. They sound more mustang like with an h pipe but again unless you are looking for that or what Darren has... just get the si/do
I recently upgraded my exhaust system to make it louder. I went with true duals. Reason? It had true duals when I bought it.
I didn't want to have to pay extra to change the piping from the manifolds back. Had it not had true duals I probably would have went with a SI/DO setup...

If you go true dual you should go 2.25" piping to retain low end torque. The thing of true dual is your paying for an extra muffler, and an extra 5' long intermediate pipe, so if you can afford to do so go right ahead, but also get a X pipe or H pipe crossover, specifically X pipe.
Ha thanks! My friends are tossed up on the increased loudness. I like it.
Yep that's exactly right. I didn't have to pay for the extra pipe or work to get it done (only the extra muffler). To be honest I couldn't feel a loss of low-end torque, but then again like I said I bought it with true duals so I wouldn't know.

What ever muffler you choose, go with single in dual out & high flow cats. I have 3" in 2.5" dual out & high flows love the tone of my 5.4 V8.

Shop around. I know of two shops were I live that will do a true dual with x/h pipe, mufflers and tips all for about 400. Most of these "cat-back bolt on systems" cost around that or just under. I di true duals 2.5 all the way with X-Pipe and Magnaflow mufflers on my '02 and loved.
Looks like TruckGuy and Darren have hit all the major points
- 2.25 inch smooth bent/mandrel bent pipes for best power across the board
- H/X-pipe is almost required on these heavy trucks
- Straight through, high flowing mufflers so all that new piping won't be restricted
- Hi-flow cats for a really loud and high performance set up

First off, do you have emission control over where your at?? You plan on running cats? I just posted this on the other thread. IMHO.. true duals are strickly for all out, high HP, WOT use. Other than a nice sound you will actually lose power on that 4.2. What some guys dont get is that you actually need some backpressure given with a single exhaust system to keep your low end torque. Just an example here. WHen I raced my SS often my friend had an SS doing 10.90's consistently. He had true duals thinking because he was pushing 500 rwhp that was the thing to do. After a year of racing and daily driving he got tired of the resonation and noise so he went with a Y-pipe and catback system. He told me that it felt like he had more on the bottom. Took it to the track to hang out with the guys and did a couple runs and pulled backed up 10.82's. For you guys thats been around racing, it takes a hell of a lot to get a tenth after getting into the 11's.
Oh yeah... I had true duals as well for 4 years then went to a y-pipe catback as well.
Sorry for the rambling got carried away. lol

lol, i went from the 3" single oem on my 04 van which i've now run for 177k miles, compared to my other 7 vans with that same 3" siso oem exhaust, their bottom end sucks, when SIZED AND DONE CORRECTLY, dual exhaust is the way to go, i tow `5,500 lbs everyweekend,my bottom end with this exhaust blows the oem away...
btw-i'd bet he didn't change exhaust out at track and run those times the same day under the SAME conditions...
