Truck won't start!

I'm pretty sure I already know what you all are going to tell me but here goes... I have an '06 V8 5.4L F150 and I just installed my K&N CAI. When I turn the key the truck starts and immediately goes to about 2200 RPM then slowly comes down, as its dying the panel says Engine Failsafe Mode and then I quickly turn the key off. It sounds like the engine is getting flooded. I've heard rumors that on some Fords if you don't get a programmer and install a CAI that this would happen. I thought that was older models though, and I heard that an '06 would be fine. Any ideas?

maybe the filter was over oiled and you need to clean the MAF

x2 on the over oiled part. You need to be careful with those K&Ns.

the MAF is the original, not from K&N.

no, he means the oil in the K&N may have been applied excessively and its clogged the MAF.

Ok, cleaned the MAF and the truck starts fine. 3 more questions...I have a check engine light. Is that because I have to get a programmer? Next, there is a pretty good whistle that comes from the intake when I hit the throttle, is that normal? Once I get up towards WOT, the rumble that I'm use to with a CAI comes in and the whistle goes away. Lastly, it says I'm getting 6MPG, is that extremely inaccurate because I dont have a programmer, or is it that my current FCU is flooding the engine?
