Which exhaust...2006 KR 5.4
Hey all, I'm looking at upgrading my exhaust and want a good rumble but not a loud sound. I'd like to pick up a little performance if possible, but picking up extra MPG's is more important. I have installed electric fans and done the Gotts type intake mod, Gryphon tuner will come after the exhaust. The Gryphon and exhaust will probably be the last engine mods to the truck.
Just wondering, should I replace the muffler only or go with a cat back system? Like I said, nothing loud but a little louder than stock would be fine. I have 2 young'ns that ride in the back seat and don't want any drone.
thanks for the input

Wes,
I would say because you are more concerned with MPG, you should go with a 3" si/so exhaust with a straight thru muffler. People have been jumping on Magnaflow recomendations lately, but I would reccomend it. No drone, nice and deep on accleration. I would recommend the 18" si/so as I have the 14" si/do and while it is not crazy loud, it may be just a tad louder than what you are looking for. The Borla pro xs mufflers may be also something to consider. Now what you gain in mpg's is a by product of how much discipline you have at keeping your foot out of the throttle. I average 17 city and it seems to be going up even more as my trips are getting longer for school. Borla is even better flowing than magnaflow BUT they can be quieter depending on the muffler you choose. Take some time on youtube to do a search... I will provide you with some links in another post in a few mintues to show you what I mean.

i would recommend an 18" or 22" magnaflow. SISO has nothing to do with noise, its just preference. do you want 2 tips coming out, or are you happy with 1? 3" SISO from the Y back is the best performance you can get with a single pipe set up. You said you want a little louder than stock, i would go with a 22" magnaflow, put it as far back as possible (towards the rear diff and under the bed, which cuts down on the drone in the cab) and run your tip out the back passenger side 45 degrees. it will look good, be a little louder than stock, and youll notice a little better get up and go, along with better MPGS, if you drive the truck right. IMO, borla mufflers are over priced. Magnaflow 22" would be ur best bet, or 18". like truckguy said, do some searched on youtube and try and notice the difference. good luck!
I'm in the same boat.....2006 5.4 and I am planning on the 18" si/so in a 3" cat back. It was recommended to me to get a mufler shop to bend the pipes to save some money. I lik the sound of the 18" so when I get around to it that is what I'm getting. MPG increase should be interesting since I get about 14 in town and close to 16 highway.

my prob is i can't decide what muffler to go with. low cab noise, but i want it aggressive on the outside. i ran gta's (ford's version of the borla stinger) on my mustang and loved them, now if i could just find that happy medium with the truck
