Flowmaster 40 Series loses its sound?

Hi guys,

I have a Super 40 welded in place of my stock muffler on my 09 F150. I notice it sounds great from idle to 2500-3000 RPM but once open throttle and above 3k RPM the deep rumble goes away and I don't hear that I have an exhaust anymore... Is this normal?

EDIT: Also, its new only 100 miles on it.. Will I gain the top end sound when it breaks in?

If I remember correctly, flows tend to do that. Sound great at low to mid then taper off. Now top end sound... Flowmaster's mufflers are chambered with does not have a break in period. If measured maybe a teeny pit.. as carbdon soot pushes against the wall filling any crevices. This would allow for a bit more echoing but nothing noticeble. Another thing is you said welded in place so I would assume a hack and weld. a 3" si/so would be a bit louder and deeper but I believe flows tend to taper off.

I wish it had the beef sound when WOT because that's when your gettin on it.. But I guess it will have to do for now. Yea it is a 3" SISO welded to my stock piping.

i dont think that the flow is losing sound in higher rpm's. its just with a si/so flow you can only get so loud, then the sound of the motor and the fan kinda take over.

I have the Super 44 Si/DO and it does that same thing. Always wandered. I can still tell its there, but not as loud as i would like it to be.

Well as stated, it is a thing of the chambered design, and being SI/SO with factory cats you will not get alot of sound. Super 40 is the quietest of the 40 series line, its more deep than aggressive, and to top that off Ford engines are also the quietest.

It is, I can see the embedded "INLET" on the front chamber wall.

I have the Flowmaster 40, the original, and I can hear it at any speed. Cruising at highway speed, it is perfect for me. Just loud enough to hear but not obnoxious. It's the SIDO.

I also have the SI/DO original 40 series dumped before the rear axle. When I first had it installed, I thought it was simply the best sound in the world!

Now though, I don't know if I have just gotten used to it, but its not quite as deep and loud as it first was.

Couple of things though, I had it installed when the weather was cooler and its now the height of summer!

Also I do genuinly believe that you just get used to the sound!

Anyway, thats my input

Mine did the same thing that your describing in the beginning sounds nice at idle but when driving its really quite unless I was doing like 62 exactly and it sounded nice. I switched to a dynomax bullet and its sounds a heck of alot better loud outside quite inside somewhat.

Now when you say it's quieter somewhat do you mean it's quieter than the 40?

I agree with you on that. My exhaust has me yawning anymore, the start up and WOT is just regular to me, sounds nice but there could be more to it. Planning a change soon.
