New guy needs guidance.
hey guys. I have a 2001 F-150 super cab, with the off-road and sport package. So obviously it has a 1" lift with 17's, skid plates and the 5.4L v8. I'm new to the truck game but not to mechanics. I race motorcycles and this has been the hauler but now I want to mod it. First off make it sound good with performance and then looks, so the first thing I thought was exhaust, intake, and a tuner. What do the 'experts' recommend? As loud as possible with the most performance gain, but I also want to save as much money as possible. I dont know where to start so I figured I would ask.
Are you going to continue towing with it?
If so look into a full 3 inch single pipe exhaust, aka SISO, with a straight through muffler, like Magnaflow, Borla, Corsa, Roush. Flowmasters are generally poor for performance, and only good for sound.
Depending on the year you truck was made determines when you should install a cold air intake, CAI. If you have an 04-05, you absolutely need custom tunes to prevent your engine from running lean. A good intake company would be either S&B, Volant, or AFE. K&N is one of those overpriced and underperforming CAI's, so steer clear of that one.
There are 3 companies that do custom tuning for the F150 that are worth mentioning, Power Hungry Performance, VMP, and Troyer. The PHP is the most expensive, $460 with 2 custom tunes, but it sits in a pod on your dash and shows you a plethora of information. The VMP and Troyer programmers just plug in, download, and remove. No fancy gadgets but still provide excellent tunes.

hes got an 01 so he wont need a custom tune with exhaust. like u said about gaining performance but saving as much $$ as possible, go with a single 3" system. u can buy the muffler and tip(s) of your choice online through many vendors (jegs, summit racing, performance peddler, and even ebay) i would recommend a closed box intake like S&B and volant, and they are oil less so ull never have to re oil them like the K&Ns. also, a tuner will be good for towing and what not by switching the shift points and eliminating the 99 mph limiter (which i doubt ull ever go that fast).they also adjust speed and rev limiters, and some of the tuner will allow you to adjust your speedo if u have larger wheels and tires.

thanks punisher and migdaddy. I dont tow with it. We did when we first got the truck, for towing racing quads. Now the only consistent load it handles is 1 motorcycle in the bed every weekend. But it only weighs 211 lbs so, no issue. So, a 3 inch single system. is their a certain manufacture you would recommend? Like I said, as cheep as possible but plenty of noise. I need to save money for the bike

wow, I watched your videos, thats impressive for $150. hell it'd be impressive if it was $400. Thanks for the help guys. I know this isnt the right section, but can you recommend a specific tuner and intake?

ok, sounds good. So far I have a decent budget of $673 for 5" lift, the exhaust, and the intake
. Ive been reading a whole bunch and it seems I'm going to go with PHP for the tuner. This is a incredibly stupid question
, but it says PHP is just for the actually tunes. Do have to buy the pod separate? Also they don't have prices listed. I'm obviously going to go with the gryphon.

It says $399 +$30 per custom tune. You can have 3, but most just have 2.

One more though on the exhaust system. Since I don't know where you are from, nothing in your profile, be careful about aluminized steel exhausts. The price sounds great but they will not last. Pay a little more and get stainless. You won't regret it...
no theres noting on my profile because I just joined. And if your talking about it not lasting because of corrosion issues, then it seems like SS might fit my style better. Virginia beach, VA 10 miles from the beach. The air is so salty and humid everything rust, regardless of actual water being present. But I could get the alum. and just powder coat it red or black.
