Intake and/or exhaust worth it for mileage on an 06 SC 5.4?

Just traded in a 98 4.6 for an 06 Supercrew 5.4 with 66K on it. Old truck had a K&N filter with the box cut out and true dual glasspacks with an H pipe out the back. It had better throttle response, but the power and mileage did not change. With this 2006, is it worth putting on a CAI and exhaust (whatever brand), as long as it's relatively quiet, for a MPG improvement? This thing has enough power for what I do (the 98 4.6 was gutless in comparison), but wouldn't mind better throttle response and MPG. Any thoughts? I'm not looking to dump 1K plus into a CAI, exhaust and programming into it at this point (in addition to paying for 92 octane), even though the shifting is much more sluggish on the 06 than my 98 FOU1 stock computer code.

I've seen posts on here where a CAI without reprogramming causes a lean issue.

Thanks, all!

I would just get an exhaust to free up some economy, I wouldn't trust a CAI on a untuned 3v and the only way to improve throttle lag is custom tuning.

Thanks, Darren. It "sounds" like you are an expert based upon your vids; pun intended.

So I want quieter than that now that I've had dual 26 inch packs on my 98 4.6which were even quieter than your exhaust. Any recommendations on replacing the existing stock muffler to improve the economy side, yet a little louder than the almost silent stock one?

CAi should improve throttle lag a good bit with out a tune. I put on volant CAI with power core filter and notice big difference with the lag.

A good programmer will do what you want, increase throttle response, mileage, power and torque. Get a custom tuned programmer if you opt for the CAI.

After watching all the youtube stuff, I think I want a si/so 18 magnaflow; question is, which one? I checked around town and no one has any. Do I get a round, oval, offset in and out, center in and out, etc? Looking at their website, there are a ton of options in an 18 inch version. I'll end up having to get it online, then have my local shop weld it up.
