Also i would like to know how many cats i have and how many to take off to pass emissions with NC state law. I want it loud and mean can anyone please help.

From I i read on here the super 44 is better. You have 4 cats, 2 after the manifolds and the other before the Y. you can eliminate all 4 factory ones and go with 2 hi-flow cats. As to the NC emissions, I have no idea, but you can ask a few muffler shops in you area.
Good luck.

The super 44 is gone to be louder than the 40 series, and the design of the 44 is a little better. But they are still chambered mufflers. You only have 2 cats.

Midway through production of the 05MY ford switched to 2 cats, so he only has 2.

Ok you want it loud, how loud are we talking about here? If you have to have the flowmaster sound then I would suggest, running 2.5" true duals with an x-pipe into 2 super 44's. If you want it a little louder and more aggressive change the super 44's for 10 series flowmasters. If you want it even louder and more aggressive go with straights.

New exhaust

I cant do the straight pipes because of the regulations with NC laws with emissions.

Im in NC alo and long as your check engine light doesnt come on, you will pass inspection. Also, you sound like me when it comes to sound. if you want it loud the way to go is true dual 10 series flowmasters with an H pipe, not X pipe. X pipes make it quieter regardless of their slight advantage over H pipes. I have this setup with 4 stock cats and its very loud. You wont regret it.

Im in NC also*

The difference in volume from an x to an h pipe is very small, plus x-pipes make more power and are far easier to come buy for our trucks. An H pipe has to be custom built, an x-pipe can be picked up for a few bucks online, and most exhaust shops carry them in stock.

Is your loud on the inside of the cab where you cant stand it or is it like the 40 series where you hear just enough that you know you have them?

The difference may be small, not realy though IMO. but my point was there is a noticeable difference in sound. He wants it loud, and an H is louder. It took my exhaust shop about 5 minutes from start to finish on the H installation. H is more aggressive, X is more mellow. And if the shop cant custom build an H pipe, they have no business in this field lol.

What I am getting at is he is going to be running true duals with only 2 cats, with one of the loudest mufflers available, their wont be much difference in the x or h pipe, the main difference is it will cost more to do the H pipe and wont make quite as much power. It doesn't matter though, because either way he goes it will be very loud and aggressive, were really just splitting hairs here.

ive had the 50 series, and 40 on my truck so i can answer this from experience. i was disapointed with both. it is loud on the inside no doubt, but its so nice. i dont get annoyed with it personally. my neighbors on the other hand, well... . Ill put it like this, its loud enough to where when youre drivin, it makes you say out loud man this sound is awesome i love my truck Its very very deep and growls like a mother. I set off car alarms in parkin decks everytime on purpose

Keep in mind you have half as many cats as 2001 5.4 so yours will be a lot louder.
