Muffler replacement vs. Cat back

Looking to do my exhaust soon and was just curious as to know the benefits to doing a cat-back system as opposed to just a muffler replacement.
It would be cheaper to just replace with a SIDO muffler and have a local shop do the outlet piping. But would going all the way back to to where a catback would start be anymore beneficial ?
I have the money to do either, and I like doing my own mods, but I dont have a mandrel bending setup.

Any input is appreciated. I wont get into the brand name discussion because I have read alot of posts here and realize that everyone has their own opinion.

A cat-back is more open and better flowing than an OEM kit, and its warrantied, and all stainless.

Muffler replacement would be cheaper, but your 1998 OEM exhaust must be rusted to hell and need replacement from the Y pipe & back anyways, I would get a cat-back.

Thanks Darren. I kinda thought that might be a better way to go just based on the age of my truck. I would be kicking myself if I just did the muffler and wound up having a leak between that and the cats.

Thanks for the push.
