K&N vs S&B Ultimate Thread

So I know there's all kinds of threads about intakes but honestly these have to be the two best for the 04-08 5.4L. AF1 might look cool but it's really just shiny and has no dyno chart to back it even if it does have a unecessary 3" tube or whatever they offer. Bottom line is K&N 63 series offers a dyno chart showing gains of 15.47 HP @ 3829 RPM which is about all you could ask for honestly. Looks like a quality setup, instructions are clear and you can find a filter almost anywhere for it if something happens. Now the S&B intake has to be one of the better looking intakes and along with custom engraving makes it more appealing to the eye over the K&N but does it have the numbers to prove it. S&B's main claim to fame is the amount of dirt that is bypassed by the filter .33 grams of dirt to be exact, you can check their website for more details. They also claim up to 49.1% more airflow to your engine but after emailing S&B around a month ago asking if they had dyno results I got no response. I don't know about everyone else but I personally would have HP #'s over engraving now the wife on the other hand maybe different. S&B directions are okay but have far away shots of the engine bay justified by red circles drawn around what they are talking about. It also states if you have the brake booster in a certain area the intake might need modification, needless to say this system is fender feed. All aftermarket intake tubing appears to be about the same though S&B has taken the stock style of tubing approach. So who's to say is the best? K&N is cheaper than the S&B from modbargains.com and has actual numbers. The S&B looks a lot better but claims to offer more than just hp #'s. Any thoughts or ideas and if you've got pics post them up?

Well if you believe 15.47 HP then you might as well buy yourself a throttle body spacer.
Sorry to say but the most you'll get from ANY intake is 2 to 5 HP!!!

Well of course you'll never get what is advertised but, that's like people who add hp ETA's together and think intakes and headers give you 50hp. Dyno chart is a dyno chart though. Show me a TB spacer with a dyno chart...

If your such a believer in a dyno chart,,then I could show you a chart that says I'm making 1500 RWHP and you would believe me?
I'm just trying to say,,,don't believe the hype from sales adds. It is very misleading! Chart or no chart.

no one has published a dynochart with a TB spacer and there's probably a good reason for it

Mike Troyer showed some charts adn research that showed he could get more power from the 3.5 inch AF1 than the 3 inch intakes

Phil, it sounds like MDK is trying to start an argument with this thread

In my opinion if your company shows a dyno chart with certain gains and you buy that product and perform the same test with not even close to the same gains it's false advertising and that's not good for companies wouldn't you agree? If you showed me a dyno chart of what your vehicle made to me in person then we will talk but if you just tell me, no I'm not an idiot. I have access to a dyno jet and I'm crazy enough to install just an intake and do a run just to see what happens and I'm also crazy enough to send it into K&N and have one of two things happen, change their damn graphs to represent true results or just not say anything at all for this product. Their graph says this test was performed on a stock 5.4l, I would hope that K&N doesn't just make dyno results up...guess we will find out shortly. That's what this thread is/was about though how true are these results. Has anybody ever taken a stock truck just added an intake and shown what the differences were? I never posted much on here but I've been here since 2004 and don't remember seeing that. Typically they will have other things installed not just a stock vehicle.

Well I'm in this for the info so if you have the link for the charts I would like to take a look and educate myself more and was the truck stock or some blown engine with 10000 shot of NOS? Not trying to start an argument just looking for facts. Then again some people may take offense and want to believe their stickers make hp. I don't own either of these intakes so it doesn't hurt my feelings. :santa:

Look, the problem is that they can show you ANY dyno chart, even make one up, and they would still sell the crap out of their product because just how many people have the money to go to a dyno and test things one at a time? Chances are, if you just buy an intake with no other modifications, then you don't have the money to rent dyno time. If you bought MORE than one mod, then you would feel an improvement from all the mods collectively and be happy with the results because you can FEEL the difference. And if you or anyone else DOES call B.S. on the 15hp gain, they aren't really gonna care because you aren't gonna put a dent in their business with just your crying and whining. They are a world-wide company.

Besides, they are probably measuring flywheel hp on an engine out of the vehicle, in which case I would believe a 15hp gain. 15hp at the flywheel would only translate to 3-5hp at the rear wheels.

Sorry for rambling, that's just my opinion on the matter.

BTW, there are some guys on Ebay that will sell you a chip that plugs into your intake that will give you an additional 160hp for only $25, if anyone is interested!

If you don't get the results that they clam and bitch about it,,they will just tell you about the differences in dynos. And on any given day you can see a 15HP difference on a dyno with just a temperature change.

They all do it we know that but really this was not about HP debating. I was looking for people who had them installed in their vehicles so I could see what one looked like installed, maybe see if there were any problems with the installs and even each sound like. I'm assuming the K&N is a little through the open air design as opposed to the S&B which from the way it's designed seems rational but pictures were my main goal here along with all the other factors. Some people with S&B may say it wasn't worth the money and or with the K&N and those are the kinds of opinions I want to hear.

I think you should do a little more research on something that you are thinking about buying. Me personally i think you are on here just to cause problems. your sitting here talking about buying a K&N intake over an S&B or AF1 intake. If you do your research or call up the tuners that know these trucks like the backs of their hands, you will see that the K&N doesnt stand up to the S&B or AF1(which by the way makes the most power) your going to be dissapointed when you get that K&N and take it to your dyno. K&N isnt going to care either way. you dont have the money or time to fight them about their claims. ohh and BTW dont go around saying things like this

"Then again some people may take offense and want to believe their stickers make hp."

when you call nitrous

"...or some blown engine with 10000 shot of NOS?"

i feel like im in fast and the furious when i hear people say that.

yeah, that 15hp difference can be found after a couple of heat soaks. all i can say, is i run an s&g on my 05 without a tune yet, and so far there is no drone that people talk about. you can hear it when your on the pedal quite a bit, but that's not an issue for me. no adverse affects. i will get a tuner before summer and the towing begins, because the ltft shows it to be a touch lean under load. i found my s&g at modular mustang racing in cali. on a year end special for 125$

Ive used K+n for years without a problem but went with the s+b because of the looks and the box.15hp is bs and s+b will not advertise dyno numbers because of the arguement you guys are having about this.

Almost forgot the s+b makes 10hp-13lbft on the dyno with a custum tune.Thats also with 05 5.4 with stock exhaust on 87 octane.Ask php or troyer what they get out of the k+n its probably about the same.Remember this is with a tune, putting a intake on with no tune will be much less gain maybe even some loss of hp
