3-Inch Cat-Back or Magnaflow Muffler?

I've got an aluminized turbo muffler 3-inch cat-back from summit racing (684014). Should I install it or replace the stock muffler with a 24 inch stainless magnaflow muffler(12286) with stock pipe? The overall length is 30 inches-the longest I could find to match the giant stocker. I'm looking for better power from idle to about 3500rpm, better mpg, and slightly better sound-in that order. I'm not looking for that ultra-loud truck sound, maybe just a little more when I want it. It's a 4.6L with an airaid intake. I'm most likely going to go with the cat-back because my wife already ordered it, but I can always return it... If I do go with the 3-inch kit, will I have that popping sound when I let off the gas? Thanks!

3" would be my choice. Turbo mufflers are super quiet, I don't see you having any trouble with popping/gargling.

You must want a very quiet truck. The 24" body is very quiet almost near stock. The 3" cat-back will be great though, you should not experience and pop, or gargle sounds especially with the Magnaflow muffler.

I was curious about the summit one...i don't want an uber loud truck but i want to know its there only when i step on it. my fun toy is my trans am which is extremely loud due to open headers, the truck goes on long trips and taking the loudness with it isn't to good on the ears

I haven't installed the Summit system just yet.. It comes with a 14" Imco turbo muffler just to clarify my original post. There still shouldn't be any popping, right? Is it going to have any drone on the highway? Will it pull better from idle to around 3500rpm?

hmmm i don't know, i would go with what Darren said about it. i know he has a lot of knowledge about exhaust systems. i just wanted to know how it was for you. i too am looking for an affordable yet quiet-er exhaust but with a little performance.

Don't count on more power or better mpg.

I went with a 3-inch cat back dual system with Magnaflows on my 06 5.4L Lariat and exited the pipes straight back with 3.5" chrome tips. It gave me the rumble I wanted (instead of that wimpy stock wooosh) but is not so loud as to be an annoyance. Coupled with the Volant CAI and my Edge Evolution set at performance level, it does rock when I stomp it.

I have no prolem with popping but there can be a bit of a drone at certain highway speeds/rpms. Still I prefer the performance sound to the factory woooosh.

Imco is known more for its sound, you'll more than likely lose power down low. It's a chambered muffler just like Flowmaster

The real question is this-Is it better to have a 3" cat-back with a turbo muffler, or a 2.5" with a straight-through muffler? I ask that question based strictly on performance on a truck that rarely sees over 3000rpm with an Airaid intake system. If I don't gain anything, I guess that's ok, but I really don't want to lose anything and I don't want drone.
