Which Magnaflow - 14" or 18"

First off great forum...there are a ton of knowledgeable guys here.
My question is whether to go with the 18" 12288 or the 14" 12198 SI/DO Magnaflow. I have a SuperCrew and two small kids so in cab drone is a deal breaker. I have an AirRAid Jr. intake (uses OEM intake box) so that should help the drone issue. I DO want a nice, loud (but not obnoxious) exhaust tone outside the cab, but will the 14" be too loud inside the cab? Since I don't have anything to really compare it to or to each other, I am not sure which would be the better way to go.

BTW, I am having my local shop run the pipes for me.

Did I miss anything here? Any insight and opinions are welcome.
Thanks guys!

For what you want, I'd say go the 14", and have the pipes exit straight out the back. It won't be super loud but enough to be noticeable. Shouldn't be too much drone. Straight through type mufflers are usually pretty good about keeping drone to a minimum.

18" The 14" will slightly drone in cab, but the 18" will drone the least.

I say the 24" dual in/dual out with built in X-pipe. No drone and GREAT sound, it practically disappears on the interstate.

Thanks to everyone for responding.
Darren and the rest, are there any other options (manufacturers, sizes, etc) you would recommend? I saw another thread about a 22" Mag but the general concensus was that it would be slightly louder than stock.

Regarding the drone of the 18", typically at what speeds/RPMs does the drone kick in?

thanks again guys!

The 22" will be much too quiet on a Ford truck, not worth it unless you have hi-flow cats and headers and want to keep it quiet ( sleeper style ).

Drone is at cruising speed in 4th gear overdrive, under 2000rpms, when your steady cruising or climbing a slight grade you will hear it hum inside. Listen to my interior video link in my signature. My drone point kicked in at 1:02 - 1:13, you will hear it kick in and out because I romped the throttle here and there but thats it. The 18" Magnaflow wont be that loud inside.

I have the 14" on mine. While accelerating around 1500 rpm, the drone noise is a little too loud for me, but once I get up to speed, it's fine. I'd go with the 18" if I did it again....Here is what mine looks like..

I think the 18" is what I want...Darren, I also like the look of the rolled tips over the baloney cut tips I used to have on my Tahoe. In fact your setup, with the tips coming out the corners at a slight down-angle, is exactly what I had in mind for my truck.

I am going to pull the trigger on this set up after I buy a few more gifts for the family...then it's a gift for myself! I will post back when it's all done!

I have an 02 4.6L i my cats out and i am running straight pipe from the manifold to a 23" glasspack to act like a resanator, then to 2 40 series flowmasters open under the cab, no turn downs, i want to change because i cant stand that flowmaster sound anymore, and was going to buy a a DI/SO or DO/DO just one and i was wondering which to go with? Thanks for any advice!

Also an avid reader and appreciate all information as a stock 06 Super Crew Lariat owner.
Leaning towards Magnaflow 16614 SI/DO as steel mandrel bent appeals to me.However
if I just purchase a 18'' muffler will shop just replace and use existing stock pipe if I wanted SI/SO.Pros or Cons for each setup aside from money???After exhaust,Bilsteins
and BFG AT 285/65/18.

You could. The shop will use the stock pipe if you request them to, or change it if you would like to. Customer is always right.

Do you need better performance? Since your already running duals I would stay that way, two SI/SO mufflers or a DI/DO muffler. Magnaflows to be exact.

If you want a muffler that has plenty of flow and not too loud for the wife and family.........go with the Magnaflow #14568. You will still get a good sound but not something that will drive you crazy. Ask me how I know!
