question for shorty headers

i know shorties dont give gains like long tubes do but, what exactly is the reason for that? i heard it was because the pipe gets smaller at the ball end of it. if this is the case, would it work if i were to get a set of shorties and grind the inside a little bit so it isnt smaller? and if so would i gain anything besides sound?

i know thats not the best way to do this. i just want someone to tell me whether this is true and if i could grind it out a little bit.
thanks

Now that's funny!!!
But really,,,don't think your going to grind enough out of that thin header material to make a bit of difference.Wast of time ,,,just get some long-tubes!

The difference is, shorty headers, such as..

Is just a little longer tubed than OEM manifolds. Now, Longtubes on the other hand,,,

Those are full length tubes, which allows for the gases and exhaust pressure to escape the heads much quicker, helping performance strongly.

i was just trying to get ideas of what i could do with a little less $$$. even though taking the easy way out doesnt always work. but yea i'm going to go with a set of long tubes when the time comes.

Yeah man thats understandable. Its always nice to do things the very affordable way. Though sometimes its best to do things once the right way, to save hassel and complications later in the run.

in the performance world, volume is the question, but with ports like these and a stock motor, how much volume will they see?

naah i think i'm gonna have the same guy that made them for my old blue and silver pickup make them for my 93. i just need to know what my friend did with his phone number. the reason i say this is, theres no way these will leak and my friends fathers 76 f250 460 has them and they are about 8 years old and they are just starting to rust. the main reason i asked was because i had no clue how long i'll even have this truck. i just didnt want to spend a whole lot of money for something i may trade in 3 months down the road. but as much work as i've done to it, i think i'll keep it til she goes. then it may be my next project for a built 5.8 lightning motor.

thats what I mean. with all these exotic exhaust systems everyone puts on these truck, without any additional engine mods, the $/hp is not worth it. I'd rather have solid shorties that I know will last and handle the additional flow from future mods, then some exotic $1000+ longtube that would support 1000+hp. Or ~$500 LT's that have qc issues.

well i'm having custom long tubes on my 302 just like my 77 f250 429cj. long tubes have been dyno proven to give the stock 5.4 30 extra hp and torque. shorties give next to nothing from what i hear. but they do give a little bit more aggressive sound from the exhaust than the stock manifolds.
