protecting your aluminized pipes

two months ago i dumped my exhaust for a cheap fix, i also bought some header paint from autozone for $9, the purpose of this was to see how much of an effect it would have on aluminized exhaust tubing. i figured i would use it as a test run before i got my duals

i gave my magnaflow muffler and my aluminized turndown a single coat before i put them on. i also had one stainless clamp and one aluminzed clamp/hanger to see the effects on, i left them bare.

so after two months here is a the trusty magnaflow

here is a stainless clamp after two months

here is an aluminum clamp after two months, looks pretty bad

and finally here is the aluminized turndown that i gave a coating of paint. you can see some rust spots forming on the edge where i didnt get any paint on it, but the rest of it is holding up well.

sorry the underside is so dirty still, it took a lot of high pressure washing to get the outside looking decent again, it was rather muddy. i didnt have the energy to do the underside, too.

in conclusion, you can see from the photos how fast aluminized can rust in as little as two months, and the protection offered by header paint. for $20 youll have enough for at least one coat. im sold on it. plus it makes it look nice, and on the tail pipes it has the effect of making polished tips look like they come out of nowhere.

I possibly will do this next year or so. MY pipes are fine now, but thats because salt hasn;t saw them yet. But if my exhaust rusts out on me and welds start breaking, i'll be swapping to the Roush Off-Road.

I did something similar with my cat back system, except I used High heat BBQ paint,
$4/can. I cleaned all the piping and then sprayed all the piping and the muffler, 4 coats each. I don't have any after pics but here are some pre installed pics.
