Replace factory muffler with straight pipe?

I can't take this quiet factory exhaust any more, so I'm looking to you guys for opinions. My truck is a 99 with 5.4. I really want to order a 3" SISO catback for it, but right now all my extra funds are going towards my 96 Cobra. I was thinking about just chopping the stock muffler from my current stock exhaust and just putting some pipe in place. I wouldn't be touching the cats, or altering the tailpipe any. Anybody have any experience with a setup like this? I want more noise, just don't want to do it if it won't sound good, or if there will be a loss in performance. What do you guys think?

If you like the straight pipe sound that will be fine. Many people have done this.

I ran muffler free for a week while I was waiting for my exhaust to come in. It is loud and mean sounding. Cut far enough away from your muffler in case you change your mind. That way you can clamp it back in.

Did you notice any loss/gains in power or fuel economy?

Not sure about fuel economy, because I only drive 6 miles to work...all city. However, the truck feels more peppy with my magnaflow set up. Just because it feels different, doesn't mean it actually is though. It was by no means a sloth...it had power when I needed it. But I drive my truck like a truck, not a sports car.

Run it that way for a week and see how you like it. Exhaust is generally easy enough for someone to do themselves. Experiment until you find what you're looking for. If you're happy...then you just saved $500 on a catback!

everyone says that straits kill your torque.

if you really want someting cheap that sounds good, i'd recommend a maggie si/so either 14" or 11". i've got a 14". it cost $62 shipped then had a shop install it. if you can weld it in, that'll save some money. vids in my sig.

I have straight pipes on my truck and didnt notice any loss in power/torque. I had a SI/DO Magnaflow and i cut if off and put a y pipe in its place.

I ran straight pipe on my truck and it sounded great, MPG wise I dunno if their is an increase, but me and 3 other guys that have done that through my shop all agree it added pep to the truck.

i cant beleive people still think straights are bad

you can just unclamp the muffler and take off rather then cutting it off

i love mine i have it ran out the side with a 24x3.5" tip from autozone so for $20 i have a great exhaust

I dont think its bad as in harmful for the trucks performance and such, just doesn't sound that great to me.
