Thnking about upgrading exhaust

Hey guys,

I've got a stock 97, 4.6l and want to know how and why there's a difference in torque gained between a cat back system vs. just replacing the muffler? I'd like to go with Magnaflow.

Thanks, KC

The only big difference with a catback, or shop made setup is the cost and mandrel bent tubing. If you are just wanting louder and like the stock si/so setup, keep the stock pipe, its mandrel bent and stainless, so it will last, and how loud do you want it, I have the 14" round body and love them, the vids are below.

Josh,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not looking for anything really loud. I certainly wont mind an exhaust that sounds deeper and a bit louder. What I really want to know is what's the performance gained from just replacing the muffler vs. from the cat back systems? The price is significantly higher for the cat back, but is it worth it?

KC :-)

Josh,

By the way, your tips ROCK! I love the side exit in FRONT of the tires too!

No, the performance gain is so low it by no means offsets the price. The stock 2.5" pipe is plenty big and will support over 400hp, and our early model 4.6's are by no means pushing that limit Just leave the stock pipe, get the muffler, I suggest what I have or a 11" oval body muffler and get a 3.5" tip and have it welded on, save $$$ and get the same performance and sound. And thanks for the compliment.

No noticeable performance differences at all. Save your money and buy a muffler to replace it with, the shop will fit it right for you. Stick with Magnaflow, your best bang for the buck.

Taking the plunge today at 3.... 14" Magnaflow, welded on for $135. Most shops here in Jerkwater were wanting over $175!

Thanks for all the help, as always! KC

I just ordered the K&N air filter and that got me thinkin...

Should I disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and reset the truck computer to compensate for the exhaust and intake changes? KC

Exhaust shouldn't matter but intake would if you installed a CAI. Drop in K&N I'm not sure but it can't hurt.

If it is just a K&N relacement filter, no need to. If it is a full performance intake kit, then yeah it's probably worth it. Oh, and you dont need to do it for 30 minutes, more like disconect the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds.

and

Very pleased with sound, it even feels quicker off the line. The wife said.. "It sounds more rumblier." Loved that!

Model was 11226 if anyone is curious.
