Thinking about hacking my muffler off
Well, my 02 F150 is too quiet for my liking. Shop quoted me $500 for magnaflow SIDO installed. Which from the sounds of it, is way over priced. I really don't feel like spending that right now. So I was thinking about just cutting the muffler off, until I can find a better deal. I know there are some people who have done it here, and was wondering is the drone bad, is it going to harm anything, and are my neighbors going to hate me?
It wont be too bad. Best off fabricating it to your stock tailpipe. Dont dump it. Sound sound similar to this

I did that to my 07 with 96 miles on the odo. Well azmidget really did it. I love how loud it is, and the interior drone dont bother me one bit. It sounds mean as hell, and I noticed no considerable performance loss.

But yeah neighbors will probably hate you. My truck at startup is real loud and deep but mellows out after about a minute, then its nice and pretty quiet with a nice rumble at idle, until you hit the gas
I just hacked my gibson of my truck and ran a straight pipe out the back... Its sounds great. i dont know why i ever bought the gibson. if you run the pipe out the back of the truck, you wont be bothered by the sound. but when you roll your windows down you'll hear it better.... before i had it to exit the rear of the truck, was dumped right under the backseats and it was loud as hell inside the cab but as soon as i ran it out the back it wasnt any louder then the gibson, In the cab
I did this to my 04, it has 4 cats so its pretty quiet for a straight pipe.. Anyone with four cats should just straight pipe it out the back and save money... Seriously it isnt that loud and if you run it out the back you barley have any drone inside the cab..It will get pretty loud if you hammer it but if your cruzin or just on the highway its barley noticeable. before I thought if i put a straight pipe, id sound redneck or something, but it acually sounds pretty nice. ill start up a tread in a couple days with lots of vids

So, cut the pipes right after the cats, or right after the stock Y pipe?
If I do it after the cats, where do you run the driver side pipe, since the gas tank is in its path?

Well, if Im going to run new pipes, thats going to require bending, and welding. So while Im at it, might as well get a new system ran correct?
I mean, for the amount of money a shop is going to charge me to run new pipes, I might as well pay a little more and get the full exhaust.
Dangit, got my hopes up for a cheap solution to my exhaust problem.

I have went through a couple different systems and now am on 2.5" pipe from the y pipe back dumped over the axle. I don't think the drone is too bad, I only really hear it in the cab when I get on it.
I would just go into an exhaust shop and have them cut the muffler off and put a piece of pipe in its place. It should be cheap and easy. Like $40 at most. 1/2 labor and about $10 for pipe.
If you really want to be cheap and have the tools, Just cut the muffler off, go buy the length of pipe and have the shop bump it out while you buy it and clamp it on.
Then you can always have a chrome tip put on if you want or just dump it.
Start with straight pipe and how you like the sound, then work towards a muffler if you want to. I started with a magnaflow system and didn't like the sound, so I lost out on some money.
