Are headers worth it?

Hey guys whats up! I got a 2008 FX4 5.4L Screw and i was thinking about installing some headers. Does anyone know what gains ill get and what to expect from it as in sound, etc. I currently have a magnaflow muffler and an air raid intake with the Edge programmer.

Shorty header will change the sound minimal, and the shortys that do run for about $500. They give no performance enchancments what so ever.

Longtube headers will give you a good horsepower and torque increase, but your economy may suffer minorly, but the Longtubes run $700 - $1200 depending what brand you go with and what options they come with ( hi-flow cats )

just remember, you'll get exactly what you pay for. Make sure they're stainless.

I bought the dynatech package and have no regrets, sounds and performs great - especially with my magnaflow

Get a custom tuned programmer before you mess around with headers.

Where in the world have you heard that shorties give no performance gains !? Regardless, that's completely wrong. Shorties on the 3V 4.6 and 3V 5.4 will put down about ~11-13 rwhp.

This forum here and other forums I have read that shortys will not give any power increase, if anything a couple horsepowers that you wont be able to feel, and I have seen some dynos and one on a GM truck gained only 3 h/p, not worth the $400 imo.

i would say that my dynatech longtubes were worth every penny i paid for them, and the PITA install i went through. i had to cut off my exhaust and drive to the muffler shop open headers, lol.

I'm speaking from actually seeing this stuff first hand. The 3V motors will gain ~10-13 rwhp from shorties .. Not to mention, I've never seen anyone say they didn't gain anything. I've seen people say they don't gain a lot or they don't gain as much as long tubes but that's going to happen on this forum, maybe on other forums though. Regardless cost vs cost you're going to get the same benefit from shorties v long tubes. Long tubes are going to be at least twice the price and give you roughly twice the gains.

Might be different on my old 2000 F-150, but the headers were one of the most noticeable improvements to horsepower I noticed. Free-flow cats were the least noticeable, in fact I noticed loss of power on low-end. But I wasn't dragging it or anything either.

This is the best website ever. It nice to actually be able to talk to people who have the experience and knowlegde about these trucks cause i sure dont trust what the dealer says anymore and it seems that performance shops just wanna push stuff on you. THANK YOU guys so much!

Helmut, you need to exchange the edge for a gryphon from PHP, thy can custom tune it for the mods you have on your truck. I agree this site is great, lots of knowledge from many people. I have my LTs on the way with Maggy High Flows, hopefully within the week for both, then the grulling marathon begins. I will even be printing out the install thread Txoutlaw did. I will also be sending my edge for an upgrade to a gryphon within two weeks and get cutom tunes from bill. It should be fun.
