Looking to replace my exhaust

I've got a '97 4x4 and when i was under the truck the other day a buddy and I noticed that the exhaust, especially the muffler, was on the road to being in very bad shape. Theres a small hole in my muffler about the size of the end of a pen, and a lot of the exhaust is starting to rust up towards the cats.

And so i've been reading, and in an attempt to get a little better mpg and gain some power, I'll probably getting a new muffler soon. I had wanted a flowmaster, but after reading i've learned that may not be the best route for me. I was looking at some magnaflows but weren't sure which ones to look at? Do you guys have any other recomendations? I don't wanna spend a fortune right now, just replace the muffler and maybe a bit more. I don't think i wanna run true duals, just because of the extra cost, but if it will be THAT much more beneficial, i'll look into it. I was thinking a SI/DO or SI/SO for now and maybe later a Y pipe if that setup would even work to run duals?

I was also looking at intakes and from what i've read, i'd be better off just buying a K&N drop in filter correct? Or should i look into a full CAI?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

(btw, we have 2 used mufflers that came off a mustang cobra probably around '00 or '01 that my dad was gonna put on my moms GT but never did. They look to be in decent shape, should I try to just go this route instead?)

IMO, I would stick with SISO. Better torque.

Also, the K&N drop in will cause havoc on your MAF due to the oil. Some peeps here say the AEM dry filter is working great.

If the dual outlet look doesn't matter to you, SI/SO setup, or the SI/DO system will be fine. Use a Magnaflow 18" 5x8. Good sound that wont wake everyone up at nigght or drone inside alot.

Does the AEM last as long as the K&N? I've heard some people rave over the AEM but still wasn't sure, since K&N has the long time rep.

Thanks for for those links Darren. If I get a SI/SO, and use a Y pipe, will that effect performance at all? Which way would be the easiest or least expensive to run dual exhaust while still providing the most gains?

Thanks again

Couldnt find the AEM anywhere else but on ebay. Does this sound like a good price? Would I be better off just going with a full CAI?

Are you saying a SI/SO muffler, with a Y pipe after it running dual tailpipes? I dont imagine that would be too good. Get the dual outlet muffler for that. If in the event you wanted it to only be a 1 outlet muffler the exhaust shop can always clamp/block it off for you, which is fully reverseable.

As for intakes I would rather the AEM. Its a great designed kit and its filters are more trusting imo compared to the K&N, and K&N uses too much plastic like the OEM intakes. Heres a guy who had a great experience with the AEM.

Yeah thats what i meant but wasn't exactly sure how that would work out. I'll probably end up going to the dual outlet route anyways, just cause it looks cooler. Aside from the 18" Maggie is there any other performance mufflers that might give me some good gains? I know the straight through style is whats better for more HP and stuff and have seen people have been really pleased with the Roush Offroad kit, but it seemed kinda expensive for me right now, unless theres a way to just get the muffler(s).

And the more i here about the AEM, the better the dry flow filter sounds compared to the oiled filters, especially the AEM. I might be able to get a used volant CAI for my truck with the enclosure for the filter for fairly cheap, does anyone know if i could replace the volant filter in it with another filter like an AEM?

Thanks for the help!
