Well brought my truck into the shop today to change the rear fuel pump out, got the spare out then i took the two straps out holding it up got the tank lift under there and found out the tank wont come out because my new exhaust is in the way. (Great) so i look at it and there is no way the tank can come out unless i move the exhaust or take off the bed. So tomorrow im going to drop it off at the exhaust shop and see what he can doo. Sorry for the rant im just pissed.
Wow i feel better

had the same problem with my 92...
options:
drop the tank like your saying, or lift the bed.
if you're doing it, take the extra time man and lift the bed. this is coming from someone who spent probably 12 hours under the truck and ended up drinking about 3 glasses of gas when the freaking tank finally fell on me. it's not as hard as it looks taking the bed off. once you get that off it's cake to change it out.. my advice, change out both of them now while you have the crap off to do it..

Ditto on taking the tank off. I have been doing that for over ten years, probably 25 or more puel pumps. remember to disconnect the wiring to the rear lights and any going to the gas cap, (some chevys have that). An air wrench and some knock off should do the trick on the bolts. remove them all the way instead of trying to lift bed with bolts still in.
