Longtubes (yes i've searched)

Sorry for origionally posting this in the oem section (i am an idiot).

I have settled on the dynatech longtubes (and after looking at them for months... i've finally got the spare dough to buy them). Now the question is... are the 2 high flow cats and Y pipe that come with the headers a good purchase for the 600$ sticker? are they good? or should i be buying maggies and doing an x or H pipe instead.

I dont want to get this setup and have to re do it later, but i also would just like to be able to bolt this thing up myself without fab.

sorry this is so long and thanks in advance for the patience and help.

I just ordered the dynatech headers today for my 99 f150, with the mid pipes and cat. converters.

If you don't want to fab anything I would go with the the complete package, because for mine it said with the long tubes for direct bolt up to factory or cat back exhaust you need both the headers and mid pipes and catalytic.

i have the dynatech longtubes with a custom setup. the catback they give you is less than an ideal setup. why? b/c it is not a true dual setup w/ its one midpipe that then splits into two pipes similar to a stock system! you will maximize your gains from the LT Dynatechs by fabbing an exhaust setup that has one pipe running from each header back independently of the other. Doing so will maximize your exhaust flow, and thus your power gain.

buy the headers by themselves, cut your exhaust off, put the headers on, go to the muffler man open headers, and have him fab you a true dual setup w/ high flow cats, an x pipe, and either a DIDO maggie muffler, or two maggie mufflers. Have the exhaust exit routed as desired.

Dynatech headers

I have also looked into the long tube headers, My Question is? is the set they sell for the HD a non y- pipe version, Two high flow cats then set to run a true dual? What is the difference in the set for the HD / lightning vs. the y pipe version? I believe I will also run there headers but wich kit is the question. Any help? J.B.

like i said, forget their midpipe and catback system. you will spend a lot less if you buy just the longtubes, unbolt the manifolds, cut off your exhaust, bolt on the headers, and drive open headers to the muffler man and have him fab you up a custom true dual system with the high flows, and the muffler/tips of your choice.

yes, all of the midpipe kits they sell are not a true dual system. the AWD system in the harleys is different than the 2WD Lightning. I also noted you have an 05. The lightning kit would not be a direct bolt on for sure, as it is geared for the 97-03 body style, and the harley kit probably is as well. i'm not too familiar with the new harleys, but on the OBS 97-03 4WD F-150, the transfer case system would not allow for a direct bolt on of the midpipe/catback system. therefore, you're risking exhaust work on a supposedly "bolt-on" system. in either case, it will be cheaper/better for power reasons to have a custom welded true dual system built for your truck.

I would love to see the actual dyno results of a y pipe vs the true dual that is preached around here. Wont you almost always lose low end torque with the dual anyways?

all 97-03 f150's, expeditions, harleys, lightnings, use the same dynatech headers. just the midpipes are different for the 2wd and 4wd

Exactly, but if you used the complete Dynatch 4wd kit will the midpipe fit 97-98 models ?

shortbox, look at all the guys on this site putting out the most power, built 54, klitch, and a lot of the L guys. they are all running true duals. yes, a SISO will be better than a SIDO, however, a DIDO beats them both.

thanks for the input, but i just finished up my entire exhaust system last week and couldnt be happier.

Dynatech LT's High flow cats Y pipe w/ Magnaflow 16612 siso 4" tip.

most importantly to me, i did all the work myself - so i get the satisfaction (which makes it sound and perform that much better to me) and extra labor costs to put towards new parts.

maybe some years down the road i'll roll it into an exhaust shop and have em chop the y pipe... but i'd rather spend the energy elsewhere now!

Shortbox54 - How nice does it sound? I am concerned it will not be loud enough with the y pipe.

I started off with a flowmaster aftercat exhaust w single inlet / dual outlet muffler and it sounded decent, but not crisp or powerful by any means. I added the Dynatech longtubes and included cats with the y and it sounds great and runs terriffic. I would immagine a true dual exhaust would pick up a little power, but I think the way the kit is, is pretty good. If you decide to go true dual, I'd suggest using a "dual in / dual out" muffler as the "X" in the system, I believe Dynomax has such a muffler. Myself, I think the 2 into1 system is great, I almost wish I would have went with an aftermarket SINGLE cat back system in a larger diameter for simplicity.
