Catalytic Converter Refund

Just took my old converters to the salvage yard (Regals in Howell MI)to see what I could get for them - I new they were worth something.

To my surprise!! For all four stock V8 converters INTACT.

$160 - They paid me cash!!

Make sure you tell them what there from. It makes a difference...

I replaced w/HF MAGNAFLOWS. - So the upgrade didn't cost much - depending how much you paid for the Maggies.

That's the most I've ever heard anybody getting for them. I got $50 and was happy. Would have been much happier with $160 though. Maybe the price of the exotic metals went up since then.

esf - it depends were you go as I learned . First I went here - Advance Metal Alloys Inc. They offered me $10 a piece for the rear cats and couldn't accept the front ones ? , Yea , but they said they would take them...Yea right, I new this couldn't be right.

The guy said to try an exhaust shop. Well, I stopped by Regals next since they deal in junk cars. Walked in the big back door in there shop and shot the sh^t with the guys for a little while, while on of them was trying to look up my cats in a book. That's when I said - hey, those came off a f150 5.4L. Then he opened ANOTHER cat book .

He wrote me out a ticket to take up front. When I got up front -The guy looked at the ticket and said I'll give yuh $160 for them - CASH! I said "sounds good ", but now I'm thinking I said that to fast - Oh well , that was cool.

The ticket read 2 and 2 and Ford w/numbers. Wish I got a receipt Damnit, so I could post it, none was offered and I really didn't care - cash is much better

Yea, when you take them back, go right to an automotive recyclers. TRUST ME - NO BULLSH^T - I just did this today. Auto Recycling yard, you'll see.

I actually got a receipt for mine but I would have much rather traded the receipt for another $110.

NO WAY! That is sweet. Wow. So, with this in mind, are you still of your previous opinion that I should keep my rear 2 cats and weld them onto the new headers?? 2 new maggie SPUN high flow cats will run $180. Regular high flow will run $160.. sounds like i'd be basically getting new cats for free.

What would be really sweet is if I could sell my actual house cats for $160..(I'll take 100 for them if you drive a hard bargain) I seriously am so sick of them clawing holes in my screen doors -- and when I kick them off of the door, my wife gets mad.. unbelievable! (may also have something to do with the fact that my 3 year old thinks its a good idea to kick the cats).

Anyway, Jbrew.... whadya think?

Yea , You might as well - Because heres what you can do. The best way to reduce from the Pacesetter flange for a stock set up is thru the cat. Sooo - if you purchase 3" inch cats they will slide right into the header flange - Well hopefully ? I didn't do it that way. You'll have to check and see if 3" cats are measured from the inside or outside. It would be nice if you could slid over the flange - that's correct.

Anyway, I would get the 3" regardless and reduce behind the cat. Your still going to have to weld the cat directly to the headers because you don't have much room before the bend and Pacesetters are some Long a$$ LT's - They really stretch them out, but I like the way they did them and really like the performance increase.

On the cats refund - call around . I didn't do that, I felt like going for a drive anyway. I was going to try one more scrap yard that has an Internet site that was close by , if I felt like going that far. Here it is -

http://www.haggertymetals.com/

They sounded like a place to try.

BTW - I would donate those house cats personally. I'm not into animals that sh^t in the house, unless they know how to use the proper facilities and wipe there a$$ intead of licking it. But that's just me.

They work in a pinch - when you run out of skeet

Hey jbrew,

I sold my stock cats on ebay and got 250 bucks for mine. No BS! It more than paid for my new hi-flow maggies. Timing is everything...When I sold mine, platinum was trading for approx $900 an ounce.

Yea I believe it, I think theres 1/10th of an Ounce in the rears from what I've just read. It's pretty high right now.

Crap! I'm pissed now, you guys made me research, I think I got ripped off, I WAS feeling good about this - My cats were perfect, intact and in great shape..

I should went to the other place I'm thinking, with the market as high as it is - Damnit!! I bet those guys are drinking beer and laughing about it now. They made a killing off my cats!!

Yeah, that's the thing.. I have no freakin' idea! I'm just going off of what other people are succesful using with long tubes and not throwing any codes. Maggie has so many different types of mufflers it makes my head spin. I found that I can get the new spun mufflers from planetmagnaflow for $160 including shipping.. I like the idea that they are a new technology and smaller, so easier install. So they are $60 more than the ones you posted.. is it worht it?? I have no idea, but for $60 bucks i'm willing to take that risk for something that's going to be welded onto my truck for the next 3-10 years!

Jbrew, that table you found is intersting.. so can we classify ours as "large Gm"?? Next question is are we the Ltl or TL?? I don't speak scrap. Jive maybe, but its been a while. Anyway, so for 2 cats and 2 precats at that pricing seems like you could get over $200.. I can't imagine its fun to haggle these things though. I'd be overjoyed at $160.

I couldn't find a list with Ford cats on it yet? - "Large Domestic" would be my guess, for the rears .
Anyway -

LTL -

The LTL prices refer to the over the scale value of miscellaneous quantities of materials. Less than Truck Load quantity refers to Lots Exceeding 100 converters (weights of less than 40,000 lbs) unless otherwise stated.

TL-

TL prices refer to sorted and prepared materials, packaged and ready for shipment in typical
Truck Load quantity refers to Lots Under 100 converters (weights of 40,000 lbs.) unless otherwise stipulated.

There worth more if the heat shields are removed, look in decent shape (specially on the inside) and less than 1" of pipe stemming from the ends.

BTW - When I seen magnaflows advertised on the web/ebay at the time, I was not sure these were correct for my model - couldn't find anyone that was selling with the tital "High Flows" or the proper #'s back then. You might find some now.. That's why I just went with Troyer - I new exactly what I was getting.

Other that know more about that can help you out more - start a thread on it.

Also , I ran with just my stock pre-cats and NO rears for along time and had NO efficiancy codes. No problems.
