k&N Drop IN?
i was reserching to buy a cold air intake and saw that k&n has a drop in air filter for your stock intake and i was wondering if anyone has one. if so did it do anything? waste of money? thanks
I added the drop-in to my 2005 and 2007 (the 2007 before I Troyer'd it) and I noticed about 1 mpg, or so on the hghway. I added one to my wife's Pacifica and noticed the same, too. Power wise, well, no notice.
IMO, drop-ins are your cost-effecient buddies. if your looking for something cheap, that will give you alittle mpg gain here and there, they drop-ins are good. if you want more noticable power, go CAI.(correct me if im wrong)

If anything I would put a True-Flow filter in my truck for a drop in. That K&N will let debris in your engine if you are not careful and it takes alot of oiling that needs to be just right.
hows that for cost effecient.
Don't you need a new filter, mass air flow sensor,tubing, not to mention any bolts or clamps?? What about the new tunes so that you aren't running lean?? Sounds like more that $30 to me, especially after it melts and you go from a cold air intake to a no air intake!

hell they sell even complete kits on ebay for you to just install.... everything included that you mentioned above...

this may be true with the Gotts intake but on the newer trucks its suicide.
if you have an 04+ model just drop the cash and get a tested CAI. for the 97-03s then you can make a mcgyver intake but its not going to net the same time of numbers a tested one will.

I have had the K&N drop-in since my truck was new, about 69,000 miles. I doubt it added any fuel savings or power, but you never have to buy an air filter. You wash it and re-oil it. If you can follow the directions and oil lightly, it works great. If you over oil, you will foul the MAF.

intakes an intake imo... the design and materials are all the exact same depending on what you use... like myself. ah well though if someone is wanting to spend 200$ for branding go ahead
I wont try it, but it seems anyone with a lil skill in that area should be able to
but they say the 3" AF1 doesnt make it run lean im sure it wouldnt be to difficult to use a peice of 3" like AF1 mock it up after it and buy and S&B filter(wich is what they use) and theoreticly(def not spelled right) you should be ok.

You wont really see much of any improvement in performance or fuel economy with a drop-in, but you will save money on long-term maintenance costs.
Instead of spending $15-$25 for a new filter every year, you just remove, clean and reoil the K&N and then just reinstall it. You still have the maintenance costs of the "recharge kit" (the cleaner and filter oil), but in the long run thats going to cost less than replacing the filter every year.
I used to have a K&N drop-in filter in my truck, but I found that it fit the airbox really poorly and you have to be really careful that you make sure the filter fits in the airbox right when you close it, or else the filter wont seal correctly and it will allow dirt into your engine. I got tired of fussing with the filter and just went back to the OEM paper filter because it fits much better.

Hey im new to the forum, I got my f150 about 4 months ago. Its a 4.6 liter xlt. I cut my cats off and have the 40 series flowmaster exhaust in. Thats all the mods I have in so far. I was thinking about putting and K an N intake in soon and i was wondering if anyone here knows prices and how much horsepower/mpg i can expect to see from it. Any info would be great. thnx
