In the past it used to be kinda boggy off the line and then it would hit it's powerband at about 2,000 rpm. Now however, it has more power off the line and the power is smooth and even no matter what the rpm is.
That was the Flowmaster making it a dog off the line until the RPM's got up a little!!! Mine used to do the same thing with flowmasters as well as many other members on here. Switch to a straight through design muffler and the problem goes away. My truck had more power with the stock exhaust too than what it did with the flowmaster 40's.

I have the flow-master 40 looking around I don't see many people with better 1/4 mile times then me so flow master cant be that bad but your right with the sound, set the cruise to 65 on the open road and go for a long ride ( I wish it was quieter) not by much but Quieter

I hear that. Id never buy another Flowmaster muffler. For me it wasnt so much the bog off the line, for me it was the durability of the muffler.
There is absolutely no reason why the flanges of a stainless muffler should rust-out after only 2 years. Even the welds of that muffler had started to rust. It kinda makes me wonder if maybe Flowmaster isnt using some really cheap stainless or maybe arent using stainless wire to weld their mufflers.
Either way, they wont be getting my business ever again.
In any event, Im happy. I always wanted to get rid of my duals, but didnt want to drop $600 for a Ford OEM muffler. When the muffler shop quoted me $130 for 1 pipe and 1 muffler, I was pretty happy. I think its improve my fuel economy too. Being that its winter right now its hard to tell (we have that winter blend fuel right now that really kills the MPGs), but the truck seems to use a little bit less fuel than it used to.

I did the muffler delete also, and I love the drone! Almost put me to sleep last night. Now, everyone else for the most part hates it. But for me its music, now matter how loud inside I could care less.

This maybe a little out of the scope of this topic...but while we are here, what about Borla? I am thinking of getting an exhaust and I was set on Borla, not sure about dual rear or single side out...does it drone? I travel on the highway quite a bit and want to try and avoid that. Any help would be great.

Remember, drone to one person is not drone to another.

My super 40 drones pretty bad at about 45mph. It is welded in place of the factory muffler. The muffler isnt loud enough though. The drone doesnt bother me. Im looking into a Roush Off-Road though.

Sounds like what im going to do Pacesetter long tubes no cats - cut-outs Dynomax bullets and 3" turn downs. How loud is it have you gotten pulled over for it? The cut-outs should be fun!!! do the bullets even muffle any sound at all??

The other thing I've considered doing but never got around to trying is getting something like lead tape or other weighted item and strapping it to the muffler body. Resonance occurs when the exhaust emits sound at a frequency that matches the resonant frequency of the body structure (cab) where it can get amplified. Thats why it comes and goes at such defined rpm levels. Adding weight to the muffler *should* change the frequency of the sound and may shift it to where it doesn't resonate. Might be an easy experiment for someone before paying to change your exhaust/mufflers.
