4.6L Trucks with Shorties

Hi guys. Just picked up a set of Stainless Steel Gibson shorties.

I know there's alot of skepticism with the fact these aren't giving any HP/TQ gains, but my decision for buying was based on these points whether valid or not:

1. 4.6L vs 5.4. Not sure the amount of trucks using the 4.6L vs 5.4L and the gains between them. Maybe the 5.4L nets 0 HP but maybe different for the 4.6?

2. Log manifold will not be beneficial for a supercharged application. Planning for the future and headers were the only option.

3. Price and installation.

I am going to make some runs with the Edge and compare 0-60 and 1/4 mile times before and after install. I dont have a dyno I can get these done at. If I find something local, I will certainly get these checked.

I'm not expecting a huge increase but I don't believe that these NET nothing.

I'll keep you guys posted. Headers are shipping..I don't have them as of yet.

well I just installed a pair of shorty ss ford racing headers on my 2002 5.4 like a week ago.... the install was ok ... the fu@##K ng ERG tube is a nightmare... found out the hard way... found out you have to remove a section and add a coupler ... .anyways... I noticed a little gain in power... I did not get any more noise like i was hoping for... upset with that ... Good luck ... let us know how they turn out!

Bumpin back to the top.

I've got the headers in my possession now and will hopefully be installing these relatively soon. New England weather isn't very warm at the moment.

Any other 4.6L with shorties?

Chime in!

Delete the EGR if possible. Makes the install easier and cleans the engine bay alittle.

easy enough. but to my understanding, there is a hole where the tube should connect to the new header, just plug the hole and leave the old tube danglin or zip tie it in place, wont that screw with your comp and make it run rich? if you delete the code with your tuner youll be fine? sorry im not doubting you just trying to get an understanding because the hookup on the factory manifold rusted away and there was a leak so i rigged it up with that aluminum tape for woodstoves and hose clamps. it works, but needs to be replaced every so often so if i just plug the hole and delete the code with my edge ill be good to go? i would think it would cause it to run crappy like bad cats can

Well, if shorties provide nothing-minimal gains what would be the best route to go ? or am I SOL ? I wish long tubes were an option but I am over here in CA which is the "no fun zone" . Any ideas ?

And JAlexander: Keep us posted, I am really interested in what you find out.

I put shorties on my 4.6 and they may help a little. i think that they are just one more part of the puzzle. You will gain more with boost that NA.

^^^^^ I'm sure some shorty headers have EOB approved, my JBA's have a tag on them ??

No, our Czar has not given the "CARB" stamp to anything that improves your vehicle. Its pretty fckin lame. No long tubes, no high flows nothing. I'm about to say Fck it and do it anyway...

please keep us posted if you find that the shorties give you extra power on your edge.

I had JBA shorties on my 4.6 '02 mustang. The EGR bung on the new headers I just capped it off with a 22mm(don't quote me on that) one sided nut. Then I disconnected all the rest of the EGR stuff under the hood. I didn't just zip tie it out of the way, I took it all out. I cleaned the engine compartment up a lot.

I after that I ran an off-road xpipe and had my SCT tuner turn off my EGR and rear O2 sensors when I went for a dyno tune. It ran great with no problems for over 75k miles.

Look for an EGR delete kit for the 4.6 mustang. It may or may not fit these trucks. It will come with the nut for the header and a plate to block off the other end at the plenum.

I would think the Edge would not work for this. You'd probably need an SCT dyno tune after its all done.
