best catback system

ik i posted this in the other exhaust thread but i didn't know there were two and this seems as the more appropriate one...sorry

I'm looking to buy a catback exhaust...i do alot of town driving now but am also on the interstate for a few miles...my truck only gets about 10 in town so i was hoping that with a catback system i can increase that by a couple..with that said i want a system with the following

1. best increase in mpg
2. deep loud tone at idle
3. no drone at cruising speed
4. loud at high rpm
5. not horribly expensive
6. would like 2 tips somewhere whether it's si/do or 2 si/so..

thanx...wes

btw...i have a 98 f-150 with a 5.4 motor

flowmaster force II

run u about $350 from summit racing, u get the 50's series truck/suv muffler, its aggressive under acceleration and deep/throaty at idle, literally no drone in the cab on the highway

i put this on my 02 s cab i have the 4.6 tho, i picked up about 1-2mpg

if you are looking for better mileage, might try new plugs/wires, air/oil/fuel filter, and clean the maf with some maf sensor cleaner, use the same stuff to clean your other sensors too, basically tune it up a bit (if you havent already)

Only consider flowmaster if all you care about is making it loud. And cheap.

Otherwise, for some mpg gain, sweet sounds and no loss of low end power, look at a Magnaflow system. For a few more $ go for Borla or Roush. There are others out there, Corsa, Basani.. do some searching on here.

Just not Flowmaster for what you describe.

Corsa is the best exhaust hands down if you want to drone at highway speeds but a aggessive sound at take off. You will also notice performance gains and MPG gains. This is a totaly unbiased opinion too as I once had a flowmaster and magnaflow catback.

They are pricey but you get what you pay for. All mandrel bent, T304 stanless and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

ok so i priced them out and i can get the Force II for 329 and the maggie for 518...i don't feel the maggie is worth almost 200 bucks so i was gunna go with the force II....then i read reviews that the Force II is pretty quiet almost the stock sound...so then i looked at flowmasters american thunder series but they don't make an exhaust for my pickup...i was wondering if they made a kit just like the force II but with the louder muffler (40 series i think??)...ik i could pry just buy the muffler but then i'd have the SUV 50 series muffler still.....also do you have to remove the spare tire with the force II application?? and has anyone tried a heartthrob exhaust kit?? they are cheap so are probably junk but just wondering....sorry for all the questions i just want the best exhaust i can afford...thanx again

It sounds like you want to go the cheap route...why dont you just buy a SI/SO 14" magnaflow muffler and have a shop weld it in for cheap. Or you could even by the tips online and save more money.

The Flowmaster would sound alright, but the Magnaflow will perform better, increase mpg ( no restriction like the Flowmaster baffles ) and last longer ( stainless steel, not aluminized ). If I were you, I would buy a Magnaflow 14" muffler ( $80 ), two nice stainless tips ( $90 - $120 ), and go to the exhaust shop and ask them to install ( $100 - $150 + tax ). Much better than buying a entire cat-back, and only a couple bucks more of what the Slowmaster kit costs.

I agree, but, Roush does not make exhaust for the 97 - 03 model F150s. Borla for that matter barely does, they focus mainly on the 04+s.

Same thing about the Banks, they do not offer exhaust for the 1997 - 2003 generation trucks, only gas engine cat-backs they offer are for 04 - 08s. Sometmes it helps to check and verify what you suggest is available.

MagnaFlow and Borla make great exhaust systems. Both sound awesome, and deliver performance gains.
