illegal?

if my friend was to cut off the muffler on his stock exhaust would it still be legal, im asking cause he doesnt have the money to buy an aftermarket one.

his idea is to basicly cut off the muffler where the pipe enters it.
would it make a difference in how his truck sounds?

hes tired of his truck being stock & not sounding good, but his inspection sticker is about to be out & were wondering if it would pass inspection without the muffler

thanks

he couldnt fork together 45 bucks for a dynomax bullet? with that muffler, you'd still be legal, and you'd gain power and it will be much louder then stock. also depends on where you're from.

you will not pass inspection in Texas without a muffler. best thing to do is cut if off. then have an exhaust clamp so that you can put it back on when its time for inspection

Vehicle Traffic Law in New York State is as follows:

ANY modification done to the stock exhaust of a vehicle to make it louder then the stock noise level is illegal. This even includes aftermarket mufflers, tips, and resonators. I have never seen it enforced here unless someone has a REALLY loud exhaust. I cut my muffler off and had a maggie Ypipe with dual 4 inch tips out the back, never been pulled over.
