CAI's...Will they suck water like a vacuum cleaner?

CAI's...Will they suck water like a vacuum cleaner?

I am awaiting my new Volant with the ram air extension. The air intake is installed through the tow hooks. I am installing it on an 07 KR Screw 4x4. Although I am very excited to see and feel what happens after the install...I remembered that I have a 4x4 and at some point in the trucks life, I will enter water that will meet up with the intake part. Will it suck water into the engine? The Volant website said that it was not for extreme off-roading. Odds are I will never do anything extreme...but what if?

If yall want to bash me for the Volant, go ahead...I have researched them through the Search tab and understand that some here pleasure themselves while looking at S&B pics.

THOSE THAT HAVE VOLANT CAI's, did I waste my money on the ram air extension? Should I return it? Your thoughts and comments are most appreciated. I should note that I had the duals installed the day after I bought the truck.

I love my volant, have one on both of my trucks and one on my mom's. Never had a problem. I was thinking about the same thing with the ram air extension, there are quite a few railroad underpasses around here that flood everytime it rains, so I opted out of it. I can't really see it doing all that much for performance over the CAI.

I have read many a thread about if the air is drawn from under the hood versus being drawn outside the truck. Cool air is better than hot. But then again, more air is better than less. I just dont know if I want the ram air extension on my truck. I may go three years before I have to enter water high enough to effect the ram air. Thanks for the reply JB. Anyone else care to comment, or better yet, do they know if it will suck water into the engine.

I'd put it on and if you have to go thro high water disconect it. I would think that it would suck up water if it was supureged. think about jeeps with the snorkle intake that goes to the roof. but if you never do hard core offroading then just put it on but keep in mind when you are off road keep it in mind. i hope i was of some help

You got me thinking about "better safe, than sorry." If it works better with it, use it, and disconnect in the rare occurence that it could have an adverse affect.

I personaly think that just the intake will make a difference. And the difference between the cai and the ram air will be minimal so why risk hydro-locking your motor.

As long as you have a second source of air the RAM AIR SCOOP will not act like a vacuum! No Hydro lock. If you submerge the filter itself all bets are off!!! Volant pulls off the factory location (Inner Fender)as well as the scoop.

All Volant Air Boxes with Ram Air Scoops have a minimum of 2 sources of air.

SWEET...you thoughts are what I was looking for! Now, I dont think there will be any issues.

If the volant has 2 separate air openings with the ram air (one through the ram air intake, and one through the inner fender) wouldn't the second opening negate the benefits of the ram air by reducing the pressure build up of the ram air?

you sir are 100% correct the pressure that may be built up with the hood is released into the fender well

I ordered the ram air , my thinking was that at faster speeds it would not so much produce a " ramming of air " as much as it would have an alternate route for some cooler air at front of and below engine as oppossed to just the air coming in from the fender well , the ramming of air would fill the box with cooler air , and yes the fender intake would negate pressure but the air would be cooler than if you only had the fender intake, Whew that hurt my head tryin to write that down.

The real problem here is:

1) All of the responses have made ALOT of common sense.
2) I am now back to leaving it on.
3) Someone will talk me into taking it off.
4) I liked your thought process, and is the best so far...

Who else wants to frolic in some mental manuscia (sp)
