Simple answer. If you have an emission testing program in your state, the vehicle will not pass the visual portion of the inspection. It may pass the sniff test if you just remove one.

Better to leave in and spend your money on other mods. These trucks already run lean, and if you remove the cats without using a turner to adjust the PCM, you run the risk of damaging your engine.

Good luck.

Well the problem is my buddy has the same exhaust setup i want with the super 44's and the exhaust sounds like it is stock with both cats, and when he took one out its really loud now.

As said, if your state does a visual inspection, it will not pass without all factory installed cats in place. You may be able to pass if you ream one or both out, it depends on how extensive the tailpipe test is, whether it's a simple idle sniff or whether it's a full IM-240 dyno run.

I dunno what MA does, but here in IL, they do both a visual and a IM-240 on 1995 and earlier vehicles, 1996 and newer are OBD-II and all they do there is check for codes. If that fails, there's no alternative except get it fixed. There is a cutoff for IM-240, probably 1981 or so, earlier get a simple idle sniff and 2500 RPM in neutral/park sniff. ALL vehicles get a visual and they DO have charts and pictures on their computer along with mirrors on the floor.

There is a law exempting OBD1 cars from emissions inspections in the State of Massachusetts starting Jan. 1 of 2008. There will be no Hydrocarbon or NOX gas sniffers or dyno testing for these cars during inspections. There will be a visual inspection of the engine for safety and the rest of the car will need to pass a safety inspection but OBD1 car owners will get off scott-free with an emissions inspection sticker.

I have a buddy that owns a gas station that will pass me for the visual part but now in 2008 it wont have to pass emission?

Has any one heard of this?
