SISO dumped -vs- exit behind rear wheel?

I'm getting ready to install an 18" SISO muffler on my 1999 5.4. I'm only interested in adding sound and don't care about having tips out the back or on the side. Plus, the exhaust system will cost less without having it routed all the way out. Will the exhaust sound be louder if I dump the exhaust behind the muffler instead of running it out behind the rear wheel? If it will be louder, I may go with a 24" muffler if I dump it to keep it quieter. Also, will dumping the exhaust have any effect on drone?

I have the 24" mag. - I had good sound when I first installed it. I removed the rear cats and it sounds like a GT now

Mine is starting to drone more, but i recently relowered the rear from 4 to 5" drop and my bullet is starting to wear out. But it still doesnt drone near as bad as it would it if had tips out the rear. Dumped FTW!

Is your exhaust dumped after the muffler or run out the back or rear of your truck?

I have a si/so dumped Flowmaster 10 series and love the sound that it gives me. There is a little drone at about 65 mph but not enough that the radio can't cover.

the smaller the muffler the better it will sound for a si/so, I kinda think the 18" might be a bit too quiet for you, but it might be just right. Dumping it will increase the sound about 15% or so, not alot but a little noticeable.

Thanks ws6,

That's the answer I was looking for. I've heard the different mufflers run out the back but wasn't sure how much louder it would be if I dumped it after the muffler.

I bet it sounds mean. I don't want mine too loud. I'm thinking of dumping it instead of running it out the back or side to same some money. I'll probably go with a 18" muffler as long as it won't be too much louder compared to if it were run out the side, behind the rear wheel.

I have an 18" maggie installed and while I like the added sound, it's barely noticeable to stock. My wife never even noticed the added sound. She just noticed the exhaust tip. Once I save up some more money I'll be swapping it out again.

Are you currently running DO or SO to the rear or side or is it dumped?
Are you going to install a 14" maggie or something else?

I have a 3" SI/SO 14" long Magnaflow dumped right at the back of the cab. I was afraid it would be too quiet for my liking (my previous vehicles were/are 1967 Mustang w/ Dynomax exhaust and 1999 Mustang GT with Spintech exhaust, both ridiculously LOUD). It's definitely more mellow than the mustangs, but the volume is great, especially at WOT. Also, it's not chambered, so no drone.

Dumped is great, no need to get expensive stainless steel tips, and costs less (pipe+muffler+labor cost me $200). I've had it for about a year and a half now, and couldn't be happier with it.
