Discolored chrome exh. tip

I finally got around to getting a new exhaust for the truck yesterday. I went with a single glasspack $80.00, and a chrome over stainless tip $30.00. Well today, I noticed that my tip is no longer chrome, but is now a bronze looking color. Could my exhaust temp. be that high to discolor the tip overnight?

I drove it probably 70-80 miles since getting it on there and like I said it is now no longer chrome.

Was it because the guy said it was "chrome over stainless", instead of just chrome? What is going on here guys, anybody else have this problem?

BTW, I love the new exhaust sound. Real nice and quiet until you get on it, then it sounds mean. Could be just a tad louder, but I am still happy with it.

i'm not sure what causes it but i have had dual exit flowmaster w/stainless tips since a month after i bought my truck and just recently after a 1300 mile round trip to FL, they have also turned colors...i assume continuous heat is the culprit, i wonder if there is a way to bring back the clean chrome look???

go to a harley davidson motorcycle shop and get some exhaust chrome polish, that's the only way and it's a constant battle

Is this only a stainless issue? I have had exhausts before and never had any problems, however, I think they were the EL-CHEAPO tips that I have had before.

Hmm.. I have a little over 1,000 miles on my Borla, mostly highway at 70-90 mph, and the chrome tip hasn't discolored at all.. makes me think your tip isn't a "hard" chrome, but has a too high percentage of another element.

My polished stainless magnaflow tip turned a yellowish color after about 200 miles. I bought some SS polish from the local farm/auto supply. With only one try at polishing for about 5 mins. the tip shines like new again and has been that way for about 3 months, but I have only put about 600 miles on in that time.

there is a difference between chrome and polished stainless steel, the stainless steel last longer but it has a tendancy to miscolor hence the need to polish them every now and again

Never had a coloring issue with my polished SS Magnaflow tips. Yours may have something to do with the chrome plating. I had nothing but trouble on my last truck with tips like those. I spent a little money and bought some tips that wont rust.

I would have to say that your tips aren't chrome at all. They are probably polished stainless steel. When stainless steel goes through heat cycles it begins to discolor. Just keep polishing them and they'll be fine.

I just recently spent an hour polishing my stainless/chrome exaust tip. The original owner of the truck had neglected it for serveral years. It was discolored and completely rusted. I decided to try a little bit of Mother's wheel polish and WALLA! It managed to take off all of the rust as well as the discoloration. Now the problem is the the exaust pipe itself is all rusty, but the tip looks good.

X2, thats what I do. When the Maggie tips get slightly discolored I clean them up, spread some chrome polish on, wipe off, buff to a shine and they are almost as shinny as my chrome step bars
