Exhaust or ?

Pardon my lack of knowledge about this but, I have a 1991 F-150, it started overheating about a year ago and after doing every little thing possible my dad finally changed the headgaskets, now, in the process.. there's 2 hoses coming from the heads which end up at a pipe and head down to the exhaust.... not sure what they are myself but, he forgot to detach when he tried to pull out the head and the pipe broke at the main exhaust...

After talking to a local shop, they said you can just get a muffler shop to bend the pipe and seal the hole in the exhaust. Now, I'm curious.. I'm pretty much done with this truck, I've spent lots on it, replacing this, and redoing that.... so is that a quick fix for a bit until I can buy a new vehicle? And what are they for?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
